    1197 GPS Antenna

I’m helping a friend with a 1197 and I believe it requires a external GPS antenna.
If this is true will the AS GPS HS work on this model to at least provide GPS signal for testing his GPS?

Yes the 1197 needs an external GPS antenna to have GPS/Mapping.
I think the AS GPS HS will give the unit GPS, not sure if the software is sophisticated enough to run a heading sensor.

The 1197 is not shown in the compatibility list for the AS GPS HS, but neither is the 1198 and it is compatible. Too old to be listed I guess.

I checked the compatibility list first and since it wasn’t listed came here.

    Thank you Wayne.

The Heading Sensor compatibility was added when the 360 came out since the 360 comes with a AS GPS HS.

AS GPS HS antenna support for 1197 was added somewhere after 6.310 ... (I'd have to check my release notes to be sure) ...

But the SI is so terrible after 6.310 - it isn't worth it ...

I am running HS on my 1198. It should be the same connector on the back of the 1197 to accept the HS. BTW, the units purchased new did not come with the Heading Sensor version but rather the regular GPS antenna. So unless you were moving, the unit didn't know which way the boat was pointed so the boat icon would turn into a circle ... it still would show you where you are, just a circle. The HS version has a compass in it so the boat is always shown as a boat. This helps when ledge fishing and wanting to make specific casts to know which way the boat is pointed. You could probably pick up the non-HS version off ebay for next to nothing (I have 2 in a box I would sell :-) The HS version are $150 a piece.

We did some testing yesterday with his 1197 and 1199 and both worked with AS GPS HS. Theses are both units he recently purchased and was unable to get either GPS to function. I was able to show him the benefits of having the HS over just GPS and get both his units working. He went home happy and ordered a new AS GPS HS.
