Buy the 2-1/2 inch hitch.
I bought a 2 1/2 for my travel trailer but use the adapter for boat
When I used the adapter, it always clanked and clacked. Kinda annoying.

Get a new hitch. I initially used the adapter but then gave the hitch to my son and bought the larger size. I liked it much better, took out the play between the receiver, adapter, and the hitch.
Buy the 2-1/2 hitch. Then get a 2” ball with a 1-1/4 shank. Curt makes one rated at 10,000lbs.
i bought a 2 inch weigh safe and use adapter-- can uses the 2 inch on almost anything else also
