51 mph at what rpm? What's your prop to pad measurement? Are your throttle cables adjusted properly insuring that you are achieving wide open throttle? Have you checked the health of your motor; compression, spark, fuel delivery?

That's a 2.0L motor and it needs to turn high rpm's close to 6000 for speed and a worked Laser II maybe a better prop for it.

I thought 5500 is max RPM on that motor!! what work would you recommend be done to the prop?

The factory service manual says 5500 - 6000 rpms max for the 2.0 liter XR2. I run a 1984 2.0 150hp, not a XR2, that turns a 23 Tempest to 5900 - 6000 rpms 58 -59 mph gps without a jack plate. That's why I asked the above questions as suggestions. My 18' boat hull weighs 1050 lbs., and I try not to carry a lot of excess stuff. That may make a difference.

Can you post the manual where it says 5500 to 6000 rpm?

The OEM Mercury factory service manual I have is #90-97658-3 (the 3 stands for 3rd edition) published in 1988 for Models V-135 Thru V-225 and for United States' serial #'s 5464486 and up. In Section 2, Electrical and Ignition, Part C, Timing, Synchronizing, Adjusting; page 2C-4, the chart at top of page lists for Serial #5203429 and above (your ser. # is "above"), "Merc 150 XR2 & Mariner 150 Magnum Full Throttle RPM -- 5500-6000." For standard Merc and Mariner 150's and 135's (non XR2's or Magnums) the chart shows "Full Throttle RPM -- 5000-5500." Do you know if your lower unit has been changed out? You're running a Tempest which requires the larger diameter gear case, and I think the XR2's originally came with the smaller diameter gear cases. If it has been changed out, you might not have the original 2:1 gear ratio that came on 2.0 liter 150's making it more difficult for your 150 2.0 liter to spin a 23 Tempest to the higher RPM's.

I have an older ranger with a 150 and a 6" jack plate as well. 3.5" prop to pad and rev that thing to 5800-6000rpms. I seeing 55mph.

Jack that thing up and rev it out!

Now you are showing a lot of prop slip. Does it throw a rooster tail when running?

13% is not all that bad for that boat and motor combo, though a rework of the prop and an ideal p to p he might get it down to 10 with a reasonable load at lower elevations. This motor should have a 2.0 gearcase as I remember
    Thank You Leon Pugh

I have tried a few different props now with no gain 52 mph is my best speed which I’m not sure I should be okay with I believe it can gain speed!!

    tempest plus 23 - 52 mph
fury 24 takes forever to come on plane 48 mph
Small hub 4 blade trophy 23 pitch 50mph

    6 inch jackplate

    prop to pad is 3”

    any feedback would be great
