Not to hijack the thread, but I also brought home a new puppy last weekend. Adopted her from the local humane society.

They said beagle and collie mix, but looks like there is probably a bit of everything mixed in lol. She's 13 weeks and about to start "fishing buddy" training :)

Awesome for rescuing him....There is a book called "The art of Raising a puppy", by the Monks of New Skete, it deals with shepherds, but can be used with just about all breeds...

Looks like my redbone hound/lab mix. She's also very smart and very stubborn ;). Stubborn is a hound trait and they will test your patience, but once trained are fantastic dogs!!!! Good luck!

Good for you and a great looking dog. As for training, positive reinforcement, and repetitiveness will do it. Another thing, always talk to the pup. My rescue lab is now over 8 years old and I truely think she knows me better than I know my self. We are on the same wave length. I brush her teeth every day and the vet says her teeth look like the teeth of a 8 month old puppy.

You're not wrong. He is already spoiled, but he's learning who the alpha is.

Was really impressed with how quickly he was getting the sit/stay command down yesterday. Took him out the dog park for an hour or so and did a few short sessions with him to get some distractions into the mix. The park area is about the size of 2 tennis courts or so and I could walk around about 3/4 of it. Any further and he would tend to break, but for day 3 I'm impressed. Took way longer to get that dang cattle dog my ex had to do the same.

Took him over to my folks last night for the first time too. He took a little while to warm up to my stepdad, but eventually came around. My stepdad was talking about his uncle that raised coonhounds and said he can definitely see that in him.

All dogs are beautiful with very few exceptions. Yours is exceptional, but looks don't matter. Glad you two have each other.
