    Winch confusion

I am thinking about replacing the Fulton T1300 winch that is on my trailer to make it easier to pull the boat onto the trailer instead of power loading. I have read many posts on here recommending the Fulton F2 1600. What I don't get is that winch has the same gear ratio as my current winch.

Is there something else about this besides the gear ratio that should be considered?

I think the F2 has two gear ratio selections - a high and a low.

    Gear ratios:
    High gear: 5.1:1
    Low gear: 16:1

Go directly to the Fulton web site and look at the 2-speed winches. The lower gear of the 2-speed will give plenty of power to pull the boat up. Either way, back trailer in water until bunks are completely wet and then pull forward to desired depth.

I understand the advantage of the two speed winches. What I am questioning is the feeling on this board that the one speed is good enough.

Getting your bunks wet may work for you but it doesn’t on the ramps that I am using.

Edit: let me rephrase that. I have read many posts here that just replacing the single speed winch that came with the trailer with the single speed F2 made an improvement. I don’t see how that can be if the gear ratios are the same.

I put this one on my trailer a few years ago. My GF didn't like the original winch on my trailer and bought this one. She likes it!

Fulton F2 has saved my bum elbow and shoulder time after time. Drop it into low and my 3 year old granddaughter could winch the Nitro up.
    One of my better purchases!

I wish I could put one on my basscat. The way they designed the step and pole on the front, the F2 won’t fit. Boat is a PITA to load. Powerloading is illegal in Michigan.

I believe can have the handle mounted two ways. One has more power.

I do, but no one wants to answer my question. Why would the single speed F2 work better than another single speed winch with the same gear ratio?

If "better" means the amount of effort, only a longer arm on the handle or winch strap drum dia. will change the above scenario.

I hadn’t thought about the drum diameter. I will look at that but I think I should just get the two speed.

Two of the three F2 models are single speed.

The low speed on the fulton has the strength to break things . LOL Makes winching my boat 10 times easier.

A ratio is a ratio. A longer handle or a smaller drum for the strap are the only variables. I'll never use a 1 speed again once I get a new one. I had a 2 speed and it saved my ass when one gear broke. Read this post I wrote.
    Total disaster averted

I replaced my f2 1600 to a f2 2000. Its crazy easy to winch on.

Im curious about this too. Is the f2 a lot easier to crank than the original? Would be nice to just peel it up nicely. I have a tr21 and do wet the bunks. But when loading by myself it would be nice not to work so hard. Thx.

I upgraded to the single speed F2 form the stock XLT. Slightly larger and significantly more robust unit for a few more lbs of force. Thats about it. Like upgrading anything else on a multi thousand dollar bass boat, need is a limiting factor.
