Does an external GPS help with position?

I have an external gps puck already mounted at the bow of my boat. I believe it went to a 360 unit that the previous owner of my boat had. I had it plugged into my 1199 even though it had internal gps. I purchased a helix 10 mega DI gps unit to mount at the bow. Should I just remove the external gps or just plug it in ?

If it’s not a heading sensor puck it’s not going to do much for you at the bow. Your bow screen will jump all over in any orientation other than north up without a HS puck at less than .6 mph. You’ll also see a circle icon and not your boat. The unit doesn’t know which direction your pointing unless moving at greater than .6 mph.

If the GPS antenna is the AS GPS HS that came with the 360, that has a heading sensor. That shows direction when you are going too slow to get a Course line. It stabilizes the Chart View in those conditions. The GPS part would not add anything extra that a bow unit with internal GPS antenna would provide.
