    Distress Signals

Are flares required equipment on the Upper Bay? If the answer is no does that change at some point as you head south?

All vessels in Maryland waters that are greater than 2 miles wide must be equipped with U.S. Coast Guard approved visual distress signals.

Ok. So are you saying that flares are needed when fishing on the flats?

Flares are optional, but a visual distress signal is a must. You can use a non-pyrotechnical signal...

"The distress flag is a day-signal only. It must be at least 3-by-3 feet with a black square and ball on an orange background. It is most distinctive when attached and waved on a paddle or boathook, or flown from a mast. The electric distress light is only for night use and must automatically flash the international SOS distress signal"

    Straight from the regs.

Doing some research on this I found out your post is incorrect. The flag is only a daytime signal. Per the regs:

    Types of Visual Distress Signals

A wide variety of signaling devices, both pyrotechnic and non-pyrotechnic, can be carried to meet the requirements of the regulation.

    • Recreational boats less than 16' operating in coastal waters need only carry night signaling devices when operated at night. All other boats must carry both night and day signaling devices.

The Flats are roughly 6 miles across West to East from Swan Creek ( Havre de Grace side ) over to Red Point Beach ( Turkey Point side ), and almost 6 miles North to South from Carpenter Point down to Spesutie Island.
