    2009 ranger with 2009 etec 250 ho

Can anybody share any positive experiences with this outboard? Looking at an 09 z520. I’m looking at the engine as the only downside. Does anybody else run this engine and have good things to say about it, or should I steer away from this one?

    thanks

I almost didn’t buy mine b/c of the motor .... now I’m glad I did!!! (b/c of the motor)

The Z520 ain’t bad either!!! LOL

If it has a 26” Raker on it (which that’s the factory prop), just know it’s fast, but will be slow on holeshot and not lift in the midrange. Put a Fury 4 on it and watch it wake up. I’ve heard the RX4 is pretty good too.

Only thing to watch out for ....... those motors came with a Lightning gearcase. Most have been upgraded to the Magnum II gearcase. The Lightning is said to be faster (with it’s 24” Raker), but you want the Magnum II gearcase (reliable and longevity).

    Good Luck with your decision.

PS: Incase you were wondering ........ ‘Yes’ I would buy my boat all over again.

I’m running my Father’s 2009 Z21 with the Evinrude. I’ve been a Mercury guy until I picked up this boat after his passing last year. The motor has been solid and I know it treated him well during his time on the water, too.

I have a 225ho on my 521. The motor has been solid. I have not had any major repair. Water pumps and filter changes. I have 650 hours on mine. The biggest repair I have had was a fuel pump last Fall. People constantly ask me if it's a 4 stroke, it's so quiet. Hardest thing for me being in Nebraska is finding a good mechanic in case something above my skill levels needs fixing.

I had that same rig, loved it. I did swap out to the M2 gear case.

I had about 650 hours on it when I traded it in on my current one. Have a mechanic look it over obviously.

    Good luck

    Had a 2007 225 Etec on my 07 Ranger Z20
800 hours on it and running strong till I hit a submerged log in 15 foot of water!
Destroyed the middle section and lower unit.

    That motor was/is a beast!
Just sold the motor 2 weeks ago today to a guy that it's going to put it back together.

    Replaced it with a 2018 G2.

The G2 is a bigger beast, Evinrude makes a awesome motor!

Nothing wrong w those etecs clean, fuel and oil efficient, lots of torque. Love mine. Take it over a 2 stroke merc anyday. Plus you will be about 272 hp at the prop.

I have a 2008 Z520 with an etec 250. I've owned it for 5 years now, it fired right up and quietly purrs, it has always been very reliable, it is fast and strong. Highly recommend.
