    396 with honda

Has anyone run a 396 with the new honda 225 with 2/1 lower? If so what prop worked best? I'm struggling with getting mine past 66 mph and over 6000 rpm. I have a 25 tempest and a 24 fury. It seems to run best flat at about half trim

Try lowering your motor and see if the props will bite more. You might need to go low and a smaller pitch worked 23 tempest or even a mirage plus in a 23 pitch.Seems like that big gear case and no low water pick ups doesn’t like high motor height. The mirage is a big diameter prop 151/8 I believe.Just haven’t seen Honda’s run over 70-72 on any boat but will run forever.

I used the mercury prop slip calculator and it says I'm at 7% slip which is good. I moved my engine up 3/4" yesterday and didn't gain any rpm which seems strange but the holeshot improved from 4-5 seconds t9 2-3 seconds. I just can't seem to find the other 300 rpm I'm missing. All this is with the 25 tempest plus

I need to measure my prop to pad I know. If it helps my engine is the same as the bf250 they've made for the last few years.

Keep coming up 1/4" at a time till you have gone too far then drop back to previous setting. That will be the sweet spot for your hull.

The only motor that I have ran is the SHO that beats every 2 stroke on the market in terms of low end big props and being able to run super high on the plate with big props. It has some serious HP .On my toon it feels like the 250 Honda has 240 hp were as a 250 SHO has 275.

Some say run the honda high and some say run it low. If I lower it how am I going to spin the prop to 6300? It won't turn a 25 tempest 6300 and its up high. Running at 6300 at 7% slip with a 25 is 69 mph by the math so that is really close to as good as it will get with either the tempest or the 24 fury. Then I read a thread about this Bobby with a 396 225 pro xs 2 stroke running 80 mph. So if I get my stuff perfect I'm 10 mph slower than that mercury and as it stands now I'm 14 mph slower than his boat. I looked at all the honda posts before I bought mine and everybody said 4-5 mph slower and that the 396 was a fast boat. I'm having buyers remorse. On the bright side my buddy in his z19 with 4 stroke pro xs mercury 200, if his hat blows off I can grab it for him because he's gonna be ahead of me

On a serious note has anyone tried a trophy or txp-ot4 on one of these. It runs flat like my bullet and those were the props when a chopper style prop wasn't on it

Trophy is too small a diameter, I have had better luck with the larger ones.

I lowered my engine. I'm now 2 and a 1/4 below the pad. I'm thinking that my tack has to be off. When I raised the engine the rpm's didn't change.

The Honda will never see 78-80 it’s just not designed for that. The Mercury has low water pick ups and Bobby’s 396 also has a hydraulic plate and turns a big 27 tempest at 6000 rpms with a 171 gear ratio .The pro xs 225 makes some serious hp also around 250 .The 396 runs more flat like a bullet as does the 797 since both have the bullet type running surface. The Honda will not turn a 27 Even with the 2-1 gear ratio on the 250 .

All the test videos of the 797 and 396 were done with a 27 tempest and even had a 29 tempest on the 797 .The SHO did not care what we put on it hole shot never changed along with top rpms always around 6100 depending on motor height.

To me the big fat gear case will like a bigger diameter prop 15-16 inches as the water coming around that case will not hit a small diameter prop. The trophy has never been a great speed prop on a charger.Tempest and t1 and raker 2 have been the best.
Granted non were on a Honda.

If you go lower you will probably have to go to a smaller pitch.

I would say is you get a perfect set up on the Honda you will be 6-8 mph slower than any other motor. And that is dependent on many factors air temperatures 2 big guys etc.One thing to remember the Honda is a lot heavier than a 2 stroke so just there you took 2 mph off.

I run a 17 mirage plus on my Honda 250 which is what a lot of guys run on big hp go fast boats it lifts the 28 foot playcraft very good.I have tried a couple of other 4 blades and the lift was not even close to the mirage.

Yeah I hate this boat. Trying to fish a tournament tosay. Just embarrassing. No holeshot no speed no good. My Motor must be junk. There's no way anyone would run a Honda if they're all like this.

I was wholeheartedly pissed when I wrote this. Sorry for acting like a child

I'm 14-16 mph slower and with a holeshot that requires 220 pounds on the front deck. It's garbage

I wouldn’t say hate the boat as it will run with just about anything with a 225 ,now hate the motor is more like it.

I absolutely hate the engine without a doubt. It's junk. Who cares if it never messes up when it won't plane a boat with a medium size load.
