    Big boom

New building in Farmington, ME had a propane leak that must've pretty well filled the building overnight. Shortly after firefighters arrived this morning to address reports of propane smell, it blew up. One firefighter killed, half a dozen injured. There is absolutely NOTHING left of the building and it was not a small place. From the size of the blast, I suppose we should feel lucky there weren't more fatalities. Prayers for the fallen and hope for speedy recoveries.

So sorry to read this. Prayers for those injured and for the family of the fallen Fireman.

Those injured are likely to suffer for the rest of their lives.

Had something similar happen in Jeffersonville IN. House was literally just gone. Houses near by had their windows blown out, garage doors caved in, some I think might have even have been destroyed.

Yeah, nothing but a debris field. Don't know the square footage but it was the new main office for LEAP which provides services for the developmentally disabled (to allow them to live in their own homes). A car parked out front was found across the road.

    Terrible.

I suspect more of the fire fighters are going to be experiencing issues, possibly death, over the next few days. Blast lung can take days to kill you.

It is always amazing to me that circumstances have to be just right in a lot of cases like this. Air/fuel mix just right, electricity has to follow a nearly impossible route for something bad to happen. But it does. Myth Busters did a propane explosion episode and had to work at it to get it to go. Yet here we are. I often tell the wife there needs to be a TV show called 'If you had to do this to save your life' where all the crazy things that happen need to be done in one shot, cold, or you would hypothetically be dead.
Even simple stuff like a tackle box. You wrap up your line on a lure, or looped with three times through the rabbit hole then put it in, close the lid, come back and 'Shazam!', it is all wadded up. I did a 5 minute talk in the boat (slow day) touting my "New, game changing, unbeatable, never to come undone tackle box knot!" after pulling one of those out of my box. My fishing partner was laughing so hard he was crying.
You wonder sometimes though how crazy the odds are of that type of thing happening when it happens. Really sad for the people that got hurt in this case. Long odds and wrong place at the wrong time.

Sad indeed. I would think any building that uses natural gas or propane be required by law for detectors that alarm when leaks are detected if it were possible.
