Law was passed in FL some time ago that boat trailers after a certain length must have surge brakes. My tow vehicle is an older Tundra and it pulls my 1880 without a problem, now the mpg's however.... geesh..

i made that remake thinking more generically. not necessarily about just Vexus.
a lot of people think pulling the boat is defined as what by vehicle is rated for pulling, when stopping is much more important.
some of the smaller cars are more than capable of getting a 2500lbs boat moving. but have issues slowing down the extra 2500lbs when braking.
Also, some cars have a two tow ratings, one for a trailer without brakes (lower) and one for a trailer with brakes(higher). I had a smaller SUV that was this way, 2,000lbs no brakes and 3,500 with brakes.

If you want a mid sized SUV check out a Lexus GX. They are a true body on frame V8 mid sized SUV. The 2016/2017 CPO models are a great value. Most are going to have less than 30,000 miles on them with at least two more years unlimited mileage warranty. Their AWD sibling the Limited 4-Runner is a more basic choice with it's 4.0L V-6. I've pulled many a 20' glass bass boats with both a V8 and V6 bass boat. My wife decided to sway away from the 4-Runners for a while. That didn't last long, she wanted another V8 and the only way to get it was the Lexus. It's a HUGE step up in luxury. To say it's superior in luxury to my old Black Edition Ridgeline is a high bar. That little truck will surprise you when you hook up something, but you said you wanted a SUV.

Chrysler has some stout midsize SUV's for towing as well. The are not body on frame. They should handle any 20' bass boat just fine.

I would not expect a Passport to handle a big ole tin rig for long.

Right now I am pulling with a 19 Laramie Longhorn which does a great job, but next year it may be the same truck with a diesel, looks like the are getting some crazy MPG's out of the 3rd gen coming the 4 quarter.

Infiniti FX 37! I had to stay with the 1880 to make sure I kept weight a good bit below the 3500 lb tow capacity. I probably won't even be leaving the neighborhood to put in most of the time, so not a big deal. Hopefully a new tow vehicle will be in the works for next year.

I pull my avx1880 with a v6 AWD chevy equinox. Pulls well, gas mileage is not great. Biggest issue is I cannot set up a 7 pin connector to disengage the surge brakes when backing up sometimes. So backing downhill or on level ground is ok but any incline is a no go.

Just traded that in for a 2016 F150 4x4 crew with the 2.7 EB.

I tow my 1880 with a Tacoma 4.0L TRD. 13.6 mpg which is not great. 18.5 mpg combined city/highway empty....not great either. In Ohio brakes are mandatory for any trailer rated at 2,000 lb or greater. I would not be comfy towing with a uni-body but that is just me.

I use a 2010 Mercury Mountaineer v6 to tow my 1880. It does bog down on a hill, and the MPG is not great. But for now it is fine. Don' tow in OD!

I have an explorer and pull a 18ft pontoon with it all the time. No issues except pulling out of water. Would stay within explorer/traverse size or bigger. Anything smaller and you’ll have issues. I have 4 kids with me normally at all times for the lake along with my wife and the explorer has been great. I know the pontoon doesn’t weigh much but is a giant kite going down the road. Also got a 17ft raycraft that it pulls great as well. More weight but less wind drag. Again always spins a little pulling boat out of water as it’s FWD. so do yourself a favor and get the AWD. For this reason I bought a 2019 Silverado 4wd which is a little overkill but use it to pull a 30ft camper as well.
