    Lower unit pressure tester

I've been wanting to put together a lower unit pressure tester in case I need it. I finished winterizing my motor yesterday and when I drained the lower unit fluid the first fluid that came out was milky looking. Put new fluid and seals in for the winter. I had ordered a few parts to put a pressure tester together and finally got them. Will be testing for leaks next Spring when I replace the water pump. Here is what I came up with.

I made one similar. Be very careful with how much air pressure you use. I use my air paint compressor with the regulator set very low.

I have a bicycle pump to use with it. I read a post by Don suggesting to do testing at 2, 6, 10 and 14 psi and figured that a 15 psi gauge would be easier to read at lower pressures.

I've got the same one with a 1/4 turn cutoff valve.

I would install an adjustable regulator.

Thanks for the tips. I like the idea of adding a 1/4 turn valve. Not sure if I need a regulator as I'm only using a bicycle pump to pressurize it.

Added a 1/4 turn valve. Looking for a 3/8-16 fitting so I can test the fixture.

Very nice! Where did you get that fitting that screws into the lower unit?

It came on a pump with the hose and fitting made by LubriMatic. I bought it to sacrifice for this project. I like the metal fitting with an oring vs a plastic one. I use a Mercury pump for putting fluid in my lower unit that also has a metal fitting. I wouldn't doubt that they are all made by a couple of manufacturers.

FYI: The T piece has 1/4 NPT fittings. Had to use a 5/16" hose barb fitting to fit the hose.
