I use a little folding one from Radio Shack. You know where to find a Radio Shack. I think I saw one back in 1996. So I guess what I mean to say is, I can't really help you.

I bought a Voltcraft VC330 clamping meter, so I could check DC amps under use/load in charging systems, etc.

Just about any hardware type store sells electrical test meters. If you want a good one look at the Flukes! You'll have to get one of those at an electrical supply house, though or online.

Fluke is probably the top one and they have a few less expensive ones. UEI and Fieldpiece both make a pretty good meter.

You can't go wrong with a Fluke. It costs more but they have a well deserved good reputation.

Fluke is definitely at the top of the heap for multimeters and I have used them for years. If someone is asking on BBC for a voltmeter recommendation to work on their basic boat/trailer repairs the one OH Ranger posted gets my vote!

The Harbor Freight meters are only good for a ball park estimate. I compared a HF meter with the boat battery meter, and a meter I borrowed from work. The boat and work meter agreed; HF meter was off by about 0.2 volts.

I use a portable volt/ohm meter, the power probe and I also use a trusty voltmeter gauge I had laying around, I put a two leads on it with alligator clips on the ends.

Harbor freight for simple work. If you are just looking for is it on or off they are all you need. Technical work get a fluke.

This is what I use at work and I have the same one for home use. At just over $100 it might be more than what most people want to spend on a meter but I really like the simplicity of this meter...

I had posted earlier on this thread saying that the meter OH_ Ranger posted looked ideal for simple boat and trailer work and I got to thinking, so I just now did a few simple comparison tests using my Fluke and the Craftsman I just received and it did very well. For less than $20 delivered it will definitely be my go to meter, especially for things like trailer work in the driveway and when neighbors want to borrow a meter. If I had to find a weak link it would be the leads, but they are definitely very usable and if needed the Fluke leads will plug right in.
