    Upper Neuse River Navigation

Have fished the Neuse for many years, but primarily from the Cow Pen landing/Turkey Quarter area down to New Bern. Got some time off the next 2 weeks and want to investigate up river from Cow Pen to Pitch Kettle, Maple Cypress, and perhaps beyond. Realize water level is everything, but where should I be concerned about wing dams/etc (running a 20’ Ranger). Many thanks.

Cow Pen to Pitch Kettle is good but from PK to Maple Cypress you need to stay to the stay a little left and don't go 60 until you have ran it. From Maple Cypress west make sure you have real good insurance and it is paid up you may need it!!!! I would not go more than 10 or 20 up to Grinnel Creek, at that point your boat is in your hands and the insurance!! Just go Slow, real SLOW!! Good Luck!!

Back in 1860's, West of Maple Cypress the South put pilings down across the river to keep the North from going up river. And that will take your lower unit out!! Plus it can get shallow as well in some spots in summer..

Thanks for the info gents, sounds like anything past PK is go slow territory. Hopefully my insurance agent is not reading this thread LOL.

Actually considered buying a jet boat when I lived in Greenville and fished tournaments back in the 80s and 90s. But after job moved me to the Raleigh lakes area could not justify it for the few times I fished down east. Course there are some spots up Falls where I sometimes wish I had one - still amazed at seeing those MLF guys running full tilt up there this spring.

They weren’t in their own boats. You can do that when it ain’t on your dime.

the few time ive been up there had good luck on the large blow downs and a few log jams --- PS+Back when Dyer had his champion 210 we would go almost Kinston years ago and the last time the water was low so we cold see lots of the blockade poles, even ran over one set at the mouth of cypress lol

Went there yesterday, caught my first upper Neuse fish. And it was a good one. Wish I knew how to post pics on here. Took my jet boat, no problems. That's a beautiful place!
