Don't run the motor until you check your max timing, I've never seen the max tab in that position. Are you sure that the timing arm was at max. advance when you set the timing, after you did the timing and carb sync? 20 degrees BTDC.

I only checked the idle timing. Will check WOT timing tonight.
Checked the WOT timing on both motors tonight and set to 20*BTDC.....was about 18*. Hope to take the boat out tomorrow. See how it idles after being run!
Did you check the TDC on both motors? Most of the time the max tab is close to the center if that helps.
Seemed to idle a bit better today......WOT is ~5200RPM.
Idling about 600-700 in fwd.....would like to see 800.
Womdering if I could put a "thicker" sleeve over the throttle roller.
A thicker sleeve won't work, the timing and carbs must open at the same time. You have adjustable idle jets, did you do any adjusting on the water? Did you test the recirculation system? Did you check TDC? Why are you thinking about a half ass way to raise the idle?
Have not checked re-circ system,
Still now clear on how to check on the water in gear unrestricted as you suggested.
I can try to adjust the mixture in the water in neutral..just reluctant to do so....

Guess I will try tomorrow.
I am still impressed by the power these motors have. The twin 175's push this 268 Grady very well!
I earlier explained about adjusting the idle on the water, just turn the motor off and adjust the idle screws.
Ran the boat today.......runs great at higher RPM.
The stb engine (that doesn't idle so well) seems to stumble between ~1000-2000RPM; after that it's like a rocket.
Think I need to fine tune the timing/carb linkage.
Turned out the mixture screws another 1/2 .....seemed to improve somewhat. Will know next time I run it!
Had an intermittent alarm that bothered me......will start another thread on that.
Does the "bogging" when throttling-up indicate that the carbs are opening too fast or the timing is advancing to fast?

Lots of jumping around going on,,,

Sorry, thought this topic would warrant a seperate thread.
Ran the boat tonight.....4000-5000RPM.
Ran great....no bogging and seemed to idle better.....didn't stall while docking!
Plan on heading out tomorrow......gave the stb carbs another 1/4 turn out.....see if I can get another 100 RPMs at idle....
You need to do all six carbs to keep everything in balance..../
