    Mann’s Classic spinnerbait

Is there a mold or already premade spinnerbait head. Also is there a guide to make this great spinnerbait?

The Do-it stlyle "C" spinnerbait mold is really close, all you need to do is add eye sockets. The eye sockets could be done by pinning the mold or you could simply use a Dremel with an end mill bit and make the sockets on the bait after it is poured. You can buy the closed eye wire forms but it might be tough finding the .031" diameter wire forms pre made in a closed eye. For someone experienced it really isn't hard to make as it is a large Indiana blade on the swivel and a smaller Colorado blade on the clevis with a small 4 bead spacing between blades.

I am working on it now as one of my projects.

Do-It Spinner Jig Mold SJ-C2-L is 3/4 and 1oz that is very close to the original head. The wire was .035 on my calibers which is heavier than I was told they use. Blades are a #3 colorado and #7 indiana with 4 or 5 1/8 hollow beads inbetween.

Allen, you are just about spot on, the spacing is 4 beads and the wire that was used was .031" diameter. That was what the original was suppose to be but even .035" diameter is thin on a 3/4oz bait IMO.

Wire is thin for that weight but they have compensated. The wire length from the head to line tie is very short and they use the twisted eye frame.

So I finally got around to pouring some heads and they turned out nice. Give me a couple days and I will post some pics of the finished product. The mold had to be modified for clearance of the blade arm since the head arm is so short. Wire frames had to be cut down as well but not a big deal. Wire frames I am using are .035 since that is what my calipers are showing on the two Manns baits I own. If anyone else has a bait they can check the wire diameter I would appreciate it.

I thought at one time I read where Hank Parker said he used .028 wire, but I realize as time went on and the things became so commercialized, they might have changed. Does anyone else remember Parker saying that?

The smallest I can find is .032 and I am not sure the arms are long enough.

You can find 031" diameter wire but not in the twisted eye... They may not have micrometer but they can sure fell the difference... Dan

    The wire

Hank Parker DID say that they used .028/.029 wire. I have some original 3/8 oz. Classics and the wire measures .0285.

I remember an article from years ago by a pro angler (not Hank Parker ) who made his own spinnerbaits using fine wire and claimed the extra vibration from the fine wire got more bites and that big fish could not leverage the hook against the wire to twist the hook out once hooked as the thin wire would easily bend . The downside was that the thinner wire would break sooner than a spinnerbait made with conventional sized wire . He felt the advantages outweighed the reduced lifespan of the bait and said he used the older baits for fun fishing and practice and only newly made spinnerbaits when fishing tournaments . Made complete sense to me and is a good reason to make your own lures .

I've also been told the same. There's some that keep a pile of those really light wire spinnerbaits handy and they catch 1 or 2 fish on one then change it out before it breaks. I've been told as well the extra vibration from the light wire was the key.

It might be Guy Eaker (former pro from NC). He was a spinnerbait specialist and Bagley (I think) came out with a bait named after him called the Eaker Eater. Light wire design and used a safety pin style bend for the line tie which was meant to maximize vibration and prevent early breakage.
