Not necessarily overkill if you are trying to stretch that 204 out past 300 yards. What brand and model scope is it?
On a heavy varmint gun to punch pooodles from a rest at long range? No. Every other scenario yes.

It’s not uncommon to see 16-24 power scopes on target rimfire rifles. I wouldn’t have an issue at all with a 20 power on a .204 Ruger. You can always turn your 20 power down, but you can’t turn a 9 power up past 9.

Anything but a crazy $$$ scope is going to be significantly darker at highest magnification, and you lose a lot of field of view for finding targets. Most of the folks who really know what they are doing with precision rifles that I have talked to have said they really only go above 15 or 18x for very specific situations, even out past 1000meters. That allows for using 15-18x in the mid-range of magnification for best optical clarity and field of view, but using higher magnification when it makes sense. Shooting some casual precision centerfire and rimfire matches this makes a lot of sense to me. If this is you and you end up with a graduated reticle of some sort I would highly recommend you get a first focal plane scope. If you’ll always be at max power that wont matter.
Optics is realative to the target size and range. A 204 ruger shooting prarrie dogs at 300 plus take more glass than say a whitetail in the woods. I would opt. for a single target dot over the Mil's but to each their own.
