Another lower unit question
Well, I have a couple questions for you guys. I have a 2007 Yamaha max 2 stroke 150hp motor. This past weekend while I was running down the lake I heard a very unnatural rattling, clunking type of noise. I slowed down and just idled around the rest of the day. I only hear the noise when in gear. I’m guessing after 12 seasons and who knows how many hours the lower unit is wearing out.
Question 1: When does it make sense to order a new lower unit versus getting it rebuilt/repaired?
Question 2: Is there anything I can check or do to fix it myself?
I did drain the lower unit oil and it smelled burnt, was very black but wasn’t muddy like water got in. There was some shaving on the magnet. A little more than normal but no big chunks.
If I do need a new lower, who do you recommend going with and estimated price?
Thanks guys.

Mine did the same as you described. It was the pinion bearing coming apart.
I had it repaired with new water pump and new seals installed. Cost was $385.00.
If you can find a good mechanic, I'd say have him take it apart and diagnose the problem. That will let you know which route you need to go.
A new OEM lower is going to be in the $2500.00-$3000.00 range.
