EPIRBs - is it time to make them mandatory?

Of course we all remember the unfortunate incident on the Big O. Now I’m anxiously watching my Facebook feed as the the USCG spends dozens of hours searching for missing boaters out of Port Canaveral, Fla.. with I’m sure dozens more search and rescue missions having happened since the big o.

Is it time for EPIRBs to be mandatory safety equipment? At least on boats above a certain size class? Or on certain waterways? Life jackets, fire extinguisher, flares, EPIRB?

I know none of us are fans of the government being more intrusive.... but is it time?

Maybe out in the ocean. Lot of water to be lost in out there.

I did a pretty in depth study and video (on FB) on these after Nik's accident. I personally carry PLB's (Personal Locator Beacon) tethered to all my life jackets. There is a lot of confusion between a EPIRB and PLB....the EPIRB is designed to be in and registered to the boat, it is a larger device (which does not fit on a bass boat well) and if you are separated from the boat you are separated from the signal. The PLB is designed to be carried on the person and is much smaller (mine fits in the life jacket pocket). Both will activate the same search and rescue...the main difference is some EPIRBS are water activated and will automatically turn on...a PLB is NOT water activated (by law) and requires a manual activation.
I carry a ArcaTex ResQlink personally.

And yes I feel like these should almost be mandatory ...especially on large bodies of water.

    Exactly.

We can't enforce the laws we already have in place. No need to add more.

Freedom of choice. People do dumb things and accidents happen. Why not make it mandatory for babies to wear a helmet in case it bumps it's head. Where does it end?

Wouldn't you need to be actually wearing a PFD for it to be effective?

Do I have to buy everything that may save my life and take them all with me? Im gonna need a bigger boat...

Really though how long does one have underwater once they leave the boat and would the device actually help in that amount of time... I imagine it would be used for recovery more than rescue.

Flare guns are mandatory because why?

Tech has changed. If they become mandatory prices will come down as more will enter market

remember - it’s not about you the boat owner. It’s about the passengers you are responsible for

    I agree.
unless of course someone made an app that sent out an alarm like an amber alert to all local boaters...but then half of us would probably turn our notifications off because they were annoying us.

No...not mandatory...but makes a lot of sense to have one off shore or on any big inland water. I plan on having one in my salt water boat soon.

I still refuse to wear my seatbelt. Make another law if you wish. My vote is NO.
