epoxy / resin deck extension and soft spot

    Hey guys,

I did my fair share of research and getting a little too many mixed opinions on the matter which ended up getting more confused on what I should do...

1- im installing a deck extension using 3/4 untreated plywood and want to know what I should do to it / use to seal it.

Would i be fine in just using west systems 105 resin and 205 or 207 hardener? or should i add a few layers of glass as well.

also how much would i need to be able to cover the deck

The deck extension is about 3x5ft .. I will be carpeting it afterwards.

or could i even get away with using just a fiberglass resin with glass and carpeting i know the bondo fiberglass resin i can get for a really good price. claims its 100% water proof and can be used with or without the glass matts.

2- I also got a soft spot on the bow i wouldn't mind fixing up as well... my boat doesnt have the wood core flooring so its "fractured" and not "rotted'... not sure how i would go about this one.

    Thanks!

West system 105/205 is what I would use. Coat all sides, then wouldn't hurt to buy fiberglass mat and recoat the top for stiffness

I did a very similar deck extension 4 years ago. I just used the bondo resin (2 quarts) and it's a dry and strong as ever. It's gone through long days of pouring rain and waves over the bow a hundred plus times too.

I'd just use the Bondo resin to seal the plywood and call it a day...couple of coats should be good, I dont think adding glass mat is going to add much value. It does harden pretty quick though especially when it's hot outside. Nice thing about that is if you need more you can get it at most Walmarts.

Yea the west system kit would run me close to 100 and I would have to order it in in most cases... but seems highly referenced on here . The bondo resin mix is 26 bucks for the 495ml which I can get at various local stores not far from me and it's about 20 for a bag of glass though not sure how far that would get me .

Would the glass matt add any strength to it? Or not really for the time n effort ?

I just used the west systems on my transom rebuild and on some side bunks about an hour ago. That stuff just plain works great. Those pumps that they come with take the guesswork out of measuring.

I just built a front deck extension and used the bondo to coat all of it ended up using some glass but only because I was permanently bonding the deck to the boat again cures fast in the summer heat and I found that the ratio isn't that huge of a deal I would try to make smaller batches that will give you more working time with the material you have

Well see how this turns out.

3/4" is definitely not thick enough so I'm going to glue in a half in onto of it and that should get me just under flush which the carpet will make up that balance for a flush finish.

One side epoxied...ill need to buy a 2nd 852ml container to do the otherside turning out good... its nice and sturdy now with the 3/4" glued with the 1/2" and the back 2x4 brace.

It is a little heavy but so be it... will be 100x better while fishing.
