As I am just getting into my restoration of a 1985 champion 18’4” I am researching re spraying the boat hull and cap with a new gel coat changing the color from brown/gold metallic to red/black metallic. I have sprayed lots of automobiles with auto 2 part paints but never gel coat. Is there any gotchas with spraying new gel coat over the old other than really thorough prep work. If not, is best to flip the hull upside down to make it easier to spray and not have to blend in spots from where the jacks are. Also as I like the idea of spraying the bottom black with a red “Champion” logo on the side can I lay down the red first and cover with vinyl masking to spray the black before spraying a wax clear coat over the red? Any help is much appreciated. I have a bit of work before I am ready to spray but I like to learn as much as I can before then.
