Hidden compartment hinges? Are my exposed hinges braking rods?

Hey guys, I'm trying to diagnose why I've broken two rods on the my last two trips out. My boat has exposed "Piano" hinges for the compartments on the front deck, that the rods sometimes are on top of. I'm thinking that a rod layed on top of an exposed hinge weakened a spot of the rod, and they broke on the hookset on that weak spot.

I want to replace these exposed hinges with some hidden hinges so the deck is flush. Are your compartment hinges hidden?

My boat is a Tuffy 2100 esox deep v.

Use rod socks instead of changing hinges.

You may have swaged piano hinges (the leaves touch each other when closed). Normally those type hinges are mounted with the pin above the lid surface. Non-swaged piano hinges can be mounted with the pin below the lid surface, but requires more space between the lid and other mounting surface.

I guess if you step on the rod while its laying across the hinge.
Most every boat I've fished from in the last 30+ years had the type you speak of.. Never heard of that issue before.

No, one was a Megabass Oroochi XX enforcer the other was a Shimano-Jackall Poison Adrena. I didn't care much for the Megabass to begin with, but that Poison Adrena was a special rod .

I understand.... some times they just break for no apparent reason. .

Broke one on a 1lb pike and my other on came from poping a crank bait out of weeds.
Plus side I have been looking for replacements and I think I am sold on the St. Croix Bass X rods.

It's possible that you have stepped on a rod that was crossed over another rod and made a hairline crack in one or the other or even in both, then they broke as you put stress on one. Sometimes they're like a steel rod and sometimes like glass !!!

Could be, I like to think that I treat my tackle very well. I've got a lot of time, money, and pride in my combos. I use to always think that people who say that a rod broke on a hookset we're just careless with their equipment, then I broke two in back to back outings.

My last time on the water yesterday nothing broke! Except my streak of breaking things!
