    Fish ID?

How accurate is the fish id? And what changes take place with this feature on?

Fish will bite your bait 50% more with FishID turned on!!

Seriously, it all depends what unit you have. I have an 1198 with 6.49 firmware. With FishID on, it will show gold fish within the 200kHz transducer cone and blue fish within the 83kHz transducer cone, but outside of the 200kHz cone. My 1199 does not work the same. All of the fish show as gold fish and does not separate between the cone angles.

Bob, is that by design on the 1199 or perhaps current software?

There are occasions I can get false alarms like at higher speeds or caused by cross-talk if I forget to turn a 2nd graph off. It is markedly better than it used to be in some of the older systems. One thing I've noticed, even though it doesn't show symbols in imaging (SI or DI), you can still get the alarm if turned on or at least it is that way with 998/1198. So, if I miss something visually on the FF while just looking at SI or DI, it will alert me.

To get both gold fish and blue fish, you have to turn on Jigging Mode if you did the update that added that setting.

The post 6.490 software screwed up the 2D sonar including FishID.

Jigging model sets the sonar processing back to 6.490<

Is it because top top fish are so thick that the fish ID wont ID the deeper ones?

That has nothing to do with it. It's the fish's air bladder size that determine if a symbol is assigned and which of the three size symbols.

Anything in the water column can be represented by an arch. That is solely based on time and distance within the sonar pulses.

That is why Humminbird's FishID is a fishing tool.

These are cold water bass and baitfish:

This shows why the shad school is shaped like it is--- lunch time.

My 1199 has the crappy 2D software and it came that way. I actually have good 2D images and have not updated it to the version with Jigging mode. Might update it in the future, but for now I use it as is. To bad HB screwed up the firmware after 6.49 and can only see gold fish and not blue and gold. I still catch fish!!

We don't want to inflate his ego too much, but Wayne would have to be rated #1 in helping people.....Rickie would have to be rated a close 2nd if you take into consideration a couple of the other forums I follow.

What do you set your fish id sensitivity at? I am not wanting shad size fish to show up on fish id...is there anything that explains what/how the fishid sensitivity works?

I leave it at Default. Haven't needed to adjust the FishID Sensitivity.
Shad won't get a FishID symbol, just arches.

There are lots of shad in the above examples. The FishID symbols are assigned to bass larger than about 1#.
Small bass do not get FishID symbols and neither do most crappie.

This is a shad school with no preditors around:

This is a very large school of crappie and only a few were large enough to qualify for a FishID symbol.

You guys really know your stuff! Just wondering how well the fish ID works with jigging mode off? The reason I ask is because I understood that with it on it would screw up SI, and in a couple of those screenshots it shows 2d with fish ID and SI running simultaneously. Thanks.

Jigging Mode On does not screw up SI, it just takes the sonar processing back to pre-83 kHz glitch processing.
Post-83 kHz glitch has better SI images, you may not notice the difference.

If you have Jigging Mode Off, the FishID doesn't work properly. The two colors are overlayed and you won't see both the gold and blue symbols. Works OK with just the 200 kHz setting though.

The gold are in the 200 Khz beam.....actually in both beams ......... The blue are in the 83Khz beam, but not the 200. (The 83Khz beam has a wider cone)
