    1986 Mercury 200 Blackmax

This is my first outboard this old and know nothing about it. I don't even know if it is hydraulic steering or not. Any help is appreciated.

    1. Engine Serial Number - OB116913
    2. Year/Make/Model - 1986 Mercury 200 (according to title) on a Champion 1988 built, model year 1989, 20'1" Single console with a 9 inch Pro-Line Industries Manual Jackplate
    3. Prop you are Running - Was given a 4 blade stainless with a hand engraved "22p" on it of Unknown Make/Model
    4. Current Maximum RPM - Unknown max RPM as I just purchased it
    5. Idle and WOT Water Pressure Readings - Unknown, just purchased it
    6. Smartcraft or Analog Instruments? - Analog I believe but some do not function from what I have been told
    7. Any Engine Mods? - None that I am aware of

    2.4L 200hp Mercury ELPTO, manufactured 7/07/1986.

It had NO steering when it left the factory... probably had CABLE steering when it left Champion (a look at the engine or behind the dash should help determine that).

Chrome motor. Prop them to run 6000 to 6400 RPMs. If it has steel reeds, changing to fiber reeds really wake the 2.4 motors up. They sound wicked at idle. Very durable motors, and put out 212 to 219 HP depending on year model. Earlier years were stronger.

U have the norm dual cable steering teleflex or ride guide system not hydraulic, wont b able tell bout reeds by listening, would need take air box off and hold carb wot and look thru carb with flash lite or long bend o light , plastic reeds usually have a color (white, yellow, etc) steel looks like steel( aluminum color) no smart craft or nething. Water pressure needs b 2-5lbs at idle, and 15-18lbs wot, give or take a lb or 2. Prop for 5800-6400 , depending on ur weight setup etc ,no lower than 5800 tho , and get a temp guage. Delete oil injection would b a smart move to , if pump fails at hi rpm it's done, plastic gear on crank with metal drive gear from pump , strips em pretty easy , especially over 6k rpm

Also side question: Trim/Tilt is extremely slow so I went to check level. I can't get the cap/plug off at all. According to mercruiserparts Part #: 19-99609A1 PLUG ASSEMBLY is NLA. What other solutions are there? Also the relief side is very torn up too but I can't find the part number for it.

Ur oil injection is blocked and removed. All good there , if trim was low on fluid u will hear bubbles, gurgling sound, the old single ram with the pump for outboard is pretty slow , best thing to do with that is find a i/o pump , then ur trim will b fast or faster than 3 ram trim , but if u have original pump then it's pretty common from what I've seen for it to b slow

86 mod has 3 ram external pump, see pics above no hoses, and relays have been mounted under cowl to use a 2 wire mtr for trim system,RAD u may can heat fill screw with hair dryer may make it easier, is it on back or side of reservoir

Would need appropriate tools, surgically clean work area, 48462A4 O-Ring Kit and 41478A1 Repair Kit.

Also Mercury or Quicksilver Power Trim and Steering Fluid.

Keep in mind- many parts for this system are now obsolete, so much beyond the seals and the system may be non-repairable.

There's an option to upgrade to a later system, but the price tag is staggering.
