JOHN DEERE 2240 WITH LIKE NEW WOODS LOADER, 50HP NICE LITTLE TRACTOR. REDUCED TO $9800.00
Reasonable. I have a 2640 that's a decent tractor. It's got enough weight to get by without the front assist for most work. There are some quirks to the 40 series including leaky rock shaft seals, but there are fixes.

BUT that tractor should have a ROPS, and I wouldn't want even a U of L fan running a tractor without a ROPS.

How many hours? I like green tractors better than red. I've run through a lot of mud with a nothing but a 2x4 john deere. Bigger then that (4440 w/loader) but a heavy tractor, good tires with weight will cut through to the bottom. IF your ground has a bottom to it.

Looks like about $1,000 to add a ROPS

I say look around for a used Skid loader. I picked up my Caterpillar 226 for under 9000 with 4000 hours... It replaced my Newholland TC-18 with loader. The Newholland was awesome for a long time.. and was when I sold it..

Probably 10 or 11 acres would be bushhogged a few times a year. I would use a blade or box blade to maintain a couple of hundred yards of driveway. Also, I am retired, so I have time on my hands.
I had a bx2200 great small tractor could do a lot but still small and ground clearance minimal.
I have a b7500 now similar hp rating but more ground clearance and weight. does well for most things
bush hogging not one of them. it is 2 speed hydro model. the b7800 is a bigger heavier tractor
with 3 speed hydro and it makes a difference. I would be all over one with 46 hours. especially
if it has loader. most of the newer b series are 3 speed hydros as well. most of new ones have better
lift control than the older ones as well. most b series have mid pto but some b7800s did not. only good for
mower deck which I have. I would give up mowing deck for rear finishing mower to be honest. removing
mid deck not bad but usually aggravating especially the slip yoke on pto. L series usually more of a small field tractor
while b series is between yard type and field tractor etc. dad has l2501 I use a lot bush hogging it does well gear drive
but only 2wd. 4wd and loader are a must for me. hard to beat a Kubota in a small to midsize tractor. the b7800
would be a great tractor. easily run a 5 foot bush hog. 3 speed hydro is sweet much better than 2 speed.

    L2501 - 1.6L 3-cylinder
Engine (gross): 24.8 hp [18.5 kW]
Engine (net): 23.9 hp [17.8 kW]
Gear PTO (claimed): 20.5 hp [15.3 kW]
Hydro PTO (claimed): 19 hp [14.2 kW]

    B7800 - 1.5L 4-cylinder
    Engine: 30 hp [22.4 kW]
PTO (claimed): 22 hp [16.4 kW]

the hp ratings are often used for sales in real world the cubic inches makes more difference
    when pulling a bush hog. I have used a bx2200, b7500(I have), neighbors b2900( similar to b7800)
a gear drive b2320 and a L2501. I have mowed a lot with my b7500 in fields with mid mount mower deck
on hills it alittle weak(2 speed hydro) the L series with 5 foot bushhog is stout( it is a gear drive).
tractorbynet is a great read on tractors. again L series is a small field tractor the bx a homeowners series
the b some where in between.

Anyone familiar with the John Deere 4210?

    John Deere 4210
    Years 2002 - 2004
    Yanmar 1.3L 3-cyl diesel
    Engine (gross): 27 hp
PTO (claimed): 23.5 hp (gear model), 22 hp (hydro model)
Weighs around 2700 lbs, tractor only

With only 3 years of production there's not many to pick from, but the ones out there with 4x4 and 1,000 hours are around $10,000 - I've found a few reviews and they have all been good and with the John Deere name on it I believe finding parts and getting service would be easy.

Not familiar with a 4210, but am familiar with the bigger 4610 which is 48hp vs 27hp. That 4210 with 4x4 will pull your disc just fine, will lift light loads of black dirt (don't be surprised if you find a clay or wet patch you can't lift, same with heavy load of gravel) and handle snow just fine. Should work with smaller loads just fine.

Might have some issues with a 2 bottom plow depending on the size of the heads and ground conditions - but should be a pretty good little tractor for you.

Ag tires will be rough on your yard if you plan on doing much with it in the yard. R4 tires are a little better.

My advice would be to buy something. I scrolled through this thread and its about covered every pasture tractor ever built in the last 40 years. At this rate it will be spring and the price will jump and selection will be down.

Depends on care it has been given. That isn't bad on hours for the year. The glide shift isn't as popular as an e-hydro. The glideshift is basically a power shift, so it jerks when you shift. No big deal to most, but city slickers don't like it. It will definitely do everything you need. I would offer 10 cash and have the $100 bills there with you.

Looked at the pictures again, tires are starting to dry rot, so you know it hasn't been worke hard. Another thing on hours, the newer machines count anytime the key is on. Hours count up a lot faster than the machines of the 70's that had to be running a certain r.p.m. before they counted. I have a 2013 that has almost 1400 hours, would have been like 700 on the old style hour meters.

Then there's this one that seems overpriced to me, but maybe he's putting a lot of value on the hydrostatic?

I like the 3010, plus it has a Kubota loader instead of the woods. Manufacturers match the loader to the tractor brand. Woods, Westendorf, etc. have often put different relief valves to make you think their loaded will lift more. That is great, until you break the front axle housing because it lifted too much. lol

[QUOTE=artcarney_agr;8017380]How many hours is too many? This one has just over 2200 hours

    Hm.

In 17 years this tractor has averaged 129 hours of use a year. If maintained properly, these machines can run up to 10,000+ hours. I'd be more concerned over how it was maintained, and what does it need (tires in the future, etc)

And I partially disagree on the ag tires. It will only be rough on your yard if you have a soft yard, or come through pulling a load or with a heavy bucket. Biggest thing to remember is to not make tight turns.

Yeah I know. I knew nothing about tractors before this thread, now I've got all kinds of info.

Who knew that there were SO many makes and models and options out there?!?! Everyone's input has been a huge help!

Looks to me like Kubota is king of the market on the smaller tractors, really leaning towards getting one though I really do like the John Deere and their well thought out features but man they sure cost more!

I think I have one picked out. Went and looked at it a little while ago and thinking strongly of getting it.

    Massey Ferguson
    Model 1250
1996 year with less than 200 hrs
34 hp Gross engine, 27.3 hp PTO
    1.5 L 3-cylinder Iseki engine
    Shuttle shift
    Independent PTO
    4x4
    Front end loader, joystick
Comes with a 72" box blade
Guy's says he's been bush hogging with 5 ft but thinks it will handle a 6 ft
Weighs about 3,000 lbs with the loader

    $11,700

Nice condition, one of the front tires looks a little cracked but is holding air, rear tires look great, apparently has been stored in a barn that he backed into so the front had a little sun on it which explains the front tire rubber being cracked a little.

    Deal or not?
