    Cool Hub Set Screw

    Hey guys,

Just replaced the front gasket and rear seal on one of my cool hubs on my 05 Ranger Trial. Can anyone tell me why the set screw for the oil fill is brass?? It stripped out immediately and took me an hour with an easy out to finally remove it. Ended up getting a replacement from Harbor Freight but it wasn't brass. Just making sure I'm not messing up with my non brass replacement set screw. Thanks

Could be the old design and they moved away from it since they strip out so easily.

Mine are brass. One side always comes out,the other rounds out. Ordered about six spares for my hubs. Trying anti seize to see if that helps on my non cooperative side.
A work around is fill the cap, and squirt a little gear lube in the hub, then rapidly put the cap on. If done right, the fill should be half way between min and max on the cap.
Just did mine yesterday because of a damaged seal.

Mine aren't brass on my 2004. They're not tapered NPT's either...just straight threads. Need to use high temp RTV to seal them. I learned that the hard way and had to re-change my oil after 2 trips. Replaced the seals that time too, just to be sure. Otherwise, mine have been flawless.
