It only works for some people. My dad can do it and I can, but neither of my brothers can.

You can use two metal coat hangers or similar wire and locate a water source.
Dang what you smoking? Top 2 post from you asking about ET’s and Witching rods; I want some of that stuff!
I watched my pool guy find a line. I actually told him the waterline was in a different area.
He found it easy.
When I was younger, watched to guys find an are to dig a well.
Close-hangers.
Really didn’t believe it then.
I know it works now after watching my pool builder find one.
I watched a old time plumber use them to find underground water/sewer lines before digging.
Witching water with the forked end cut from a tree branch: In my experience it works for some people, but not everyone. Some can even tell you how deep the vein of water is.
Witching rods: 2 bent metal wires or welding rods can be used to locate metal, but it won't tell you what kind of metal it is or how deep it is. Kind of like a metal detector with no discrimination. Never found water with rods.
It works. I use metal coat hangers. Anyone can do it, once ya learn the feel of it.
Electrician here. I use solid 12 or 10 gauge copper wire. Found many underground conduits that way.
When I was a youngster we had horses. My dad decided he wanted a water source out in the horse lot. He took his two pieces of copper wire and walked out in the field. he marked a spot. A few days later we set up a manual lift pile driver. We drove 30-40 ft. or so of 1-1/2 pipe with a point on it. We then screwed a pitcher pump on top of the pipe, poured a few gallons of water down the pump to get some prime on it. We hand pumped many a gallon of water out of that pump for years.
We have a guy at work that can fined water lines doing it. I thought it was a joke the first time he done it but nope he is spot on lol.
Well if they worked some folks would be incorporated and out charging people for location services I would think. Also what do they do if you take them out on a boat, just spin around in circles like a compass will do if too close to a magnetic source?
My brother and law can do it.....cost me several cases of beer before I got smart enough to realize it wasn't a hoax....still don't know how he does it but I'm not betting against him.
It works, I've seen it, I've done it. When I work for a local water company we had some plastic lines that weren't on our maps. We need to dig one of them up for some reason. My boss ordered a set of sticks, they were simply a coat hanger sized rod in the shape of an L with a handle that had some bearings in it. Grab both of them, give them a spin or two then hold them level with the ground. When they cross there is water underneath them. We used them and marked the ground where it said the water was and when we dug it up sure enough there was a 10" water line.
