    Topwater Tuna in Panama

Just came back from a "bucket list" first time trip to Panama where we wrecked yellowfin tuna on big poppers. I'm a bass writer by trade, obsessed with the topwater game, and this beat anything I've ever seen or tried. I've been to the Amazon three times and I thought peacock bass on a woodchopper were the ultimate, but this blows them away.

Already trying to figure out a way to get back. If you're in good shape and love topwater action, this is something you can't miss.

Aren't you gonna be disappointed with those little Potomac bass that explode on a Rico.

That is amazing. I have recently stumbled on a YouTube channel for a guy that charters people on kayaks fishing for roosters and anything else that will bite. It’s on my bucket list for sure.

We went to Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge -- recommended by a friend who used to work for The Billfish Foundation and has been all over the world. He said it would ruin me and he was right.
It's on a secluded island, but the place is first class -- wifi, daily laundry, etc., and the food is insane.

We're already working on getting a group to go back in Nov/Dec -- I think there are spaces. Shoot me a PM if interested. Worth every penny.

We didn't see anything quite this crazy, but it wasn't far off:

    It's www.fishpanamatoday.com

If it appeals, shoot me a message. We went with a group of 6 this time, already have 4 for the next one, once we save a few bucks.

That would be a blast on a heavy weight fly rod. I would really like to read your write up on the trip if you do one.

There can also be some pretty good topwater tuna action around the offshore oil rigs at night out of venice. I went to Panama three years ago, and caught this 800 lb black marlin. Panama offers great fishing variety and quality

Always a great time doing that. Great eating too, put on ice for a few hours, filet and dip into the soy sauce. Yum!

Glad I had the chance to go on a few bluefin popper trips out of San Diego when they were smashing topwaters regularly. Not sure why but that bite (but not the fish) has faded quite a bit in the last 3 years or so. Best trip I went on was an overnighter in which all of the fish blowing up were in the 200-250 pound range and you could see little Volkswagen sized explosions in the distance. That was a mind blowing trip. Out of the many bluefin trips I’ve done since then, that trip stands out above all. And we had to leave the fish early in the afternoon instead of fishing well past dusk since it was an overnighter!!!! That hurt!!!! :) :) :)
