    Xi5 Detailed Installation

I've had some inquiries about my installation of the Xi5 on my Ranger z521 so I thought I would start a new thread instead of tacking on others.

Just a little background, my boat had a MG tour 36v cable steer trolling motor since I purchased it three years ago. In 2013 I fished on Falcon with a guide (Jay Grieshaw) who had a Terrova. I was immediately sold on the idea of a GPS trolling motor and the fact that I spend most of my time ledge fishing made this a must do. I also have three small children that I take out and being able to anchor while dealing with them is a godsend.

I did not like how noisy the Terrova was and I didn't think it was as stable on anchor as I would like. So I waited. In 2013 I heard that MG was coming out with their own model and that it would eventually integrate with Lowrance electronics (which I have - 2 hds12s) and the wait was on. Once I saw that the Xi5 was quieter and more accurate on anchor I was sold but wanted to wait til the Lowrance gateway was out.

I purchased my 36v Xi5 in November of last year and began the process of installation. The installation on a bass boat presents a couple issues. First and foremost is that the mounting requires the unit to be extended well over the front of the boat so that the shaft on deployment clears the rub rail. This 'can' create problems loading and unloading on the trailer as the bracket can interfere with the roller on the trailer. With this, I had the option of the various removable mounts. Motorguide has the "pin on" removable mount which I did not like for several reasons and Minn Kota had a couple slide on mounts. I chose to go with the Minn Kota MKA-47 and have been very pleased with this bracket.

I did have to modify the mount slightly to work in my application. First, the threaded mounting holes on the bracket don't perfectly line up with the Xi5 as they are just slightly too narrow. I was able to re-drill them on one side and use bolts and nuts on that side to make. The next issue is difficult to describe. I wanted the curved front of the bracket to "key" into the gunwale of the 521 and have about 1/8" of clearance. I also wanted the shaft to clear the rubrail by 1/4" or so when extended. The difference between these mounting position is about 5". This required me to drill the top plate to create a new locking point for the thumbscrew that locks the upper to lower plates of the mount and slot the hex screw slot on the top plate about 1/2". So for my application the bracket stops short of full extension on both ends of travel by about 1/2".

The next issue was with the installation of the Lowrance HDI transducer to allow for downscan imaging from the trolling motor. Rant: Given the relatively low cost of the HDI transducer, it is beyond me why Lowrance and Motorguide do not include downscan capability in the built in unit. The challenge with the transducer install is dealing with the cable. MG does not have a slot like the Terrova to route a cable up the shaft so it must be coiled around the shaft. For this I borrowed the idea of using a 1/2" rigid water hose to provide a permanent coil and to protect the HDI cable. This has proved to be a manageable solution but does make stowing the unit a little more challenging due to the buildup between the motor and steering block.

The last issue I had with install was the lack of a handle to help with deploy/stow. Rant: it is beyond me why MotorGuide doesn't have something for this. The good news is that the shaft is 1.25" in diameter which happens to be a common size for bicycle stems. After a lot of investigation I found a Cannondale Lefty one piece stem (ebay $40) that is AWESOME, installs in 1 minute and makes a dramatic difference in ease of deploy/stow. Here is a picture of it installed:

Having fished a week or so with this setup I can say that it is one awesome setup. The ability to anchor on a spot is something I could never give up. I love the heading lock and use it for running banks. This past weekend I did a lot of bank shakeyhead fishing and it is so nice to set the heading and speed (in this case .3 mph) and not have to stand on the trolling motor or start and stop. It really does make fishing easier and makes me a better fisherman.

I have played some with the gateway and lowrance integration and think it is well implemented but not as important as the base features of the Xi5. The route following is very neat but as a primary bass fisherman it is not mandatory.

For me this product gets pretty close to the holy grail of trolling motors. I wish for a couple things:

One - the previously mentioned integration of downscan IN the motor. If that can't happen for noise issues, then give me a suitable slot or channel up the shaft to run the cable.
Two - power deploy and stow like the new Minn Kota. Awesome feature.
Three - a proportional foot control. The technology is there to build a foot control that links to the unit that allows for proportional steering based on position of the foot pedal. The 'on-off' left right foot control is a joke. A proportional foot control would make the unit behave just like what we are used to and speed the demise of the cable steer trolling motor.

Great thread, excellent pictures and great method of installing this setup. I have an XI5 in the box ready to go on my boat and you have answered some of the questions I have been thinking about. The biggest thing I Dont like is the large overhang this TM needs. I will see if I can make it work on my Phoenix as good as you have it on your boat.

Running the Xi5 on an Allison creates an odd overhang but the benefits of the Xi5 with GPS far outweigh the odd mounting.

Thanks for the post & pics! I'm also dumbfounded that Lowrance/Motorguide did not plan for HDI capability. Makes zero sense

I rarely even turn my foot pedal on as the remote works so well unless I'm in and out of stumps. I'm not a long time fisherman though and my first boat I installed the Xi5 last year so I guess it's all what you're used to.

Great post. I just installed mine over the weekend and got out yesterday evening for a short trip. Spot locked it on the windy side of a point (15-20 mph wind) and caught 4 fish in about 30 minutes. It is a spot that I might have caught one and left as I would have had to fight the trolling motor with the front of the boat facing away from the bank. Boat was in 30' of water so power pole or talon wouldn't work. I am sold that I made the right decision. Won't feel so worn out from fishing on windy days which seems to be the case every time I want to go fishing.

I think I need to change to the slide plate. the overhang makes launching and retrieving a nightmare with bow roller interference. I have to be extremely careful or it slams down on it.

edit: Did you find the MKA-47 plate cheaper than 140? I would like to do this but if I can find it cheaper that would make it easier to stomach.

I have an Xi5 on my small boat for the horse power restricted reservoir I fish and love it. Will probably get one for my bass boat eventually. Proportional steering would be sweet. Love the bike stem idea

I just installed mine. I really needed the front to be even with the rail so I used two brackets. The slide bracket is made by R&R Design, this is the bracket that Skeeter puts on their boats. $150 and it's heavier duty than the MKA47 (which I used on my Terrova) and also uses a spring loaded pin instead of the bolt that the MKA47 uses. I then bought an Motorguide aluminum quick release bracket to get some height. I was short 1/8" so I used some aluminum stock and done. Might be a bit tall looking but at least it works well and there's no binding or anything else.

On the other side of things, this is my second Xi5 and it has problems also. First one was shipping damage, this one sounds like a piece of magnet is broken inside it. So after all the work I won't be able to test it.

I ordered the minn kota off amazon for $138 and it will be here tomorrow. I do wish I would have seen the R&R first one but oh well. Will see how it goes, probably need a new plate water jetted for the new setup.

I have the Xi5 sonar/pinpoint GPS in a box getting ready to be installed tonight after work...I purchased the Motorguide Quick release bracket for mine...I guess with the overhang issue I could always just quickly detach it and lay it on the front deck while loading and unloading the boat from the trailer...The quick release system looks easy after examining it out of the box...

Love the idea using the bike post for the handle...Excellent write up with pics, thanks...

Super excited to get this thing installed...If all goes well I should be testing it out tomorrow...

Pbird, great write up! do you have any problems with your transducer cable catching on sticks or stumps in shallow water? Does it uncoil taught against the shaft? Thx.

Got the Xi5 installed on the Motorguide Quick Release bracket and took it out the other day...Here is a detailed report I gave on my local forum...

On to my new trolling motor...I LOVE MY NEW MOTORGUIDE XI5 TROLLING MOTOR!!! I can't count the number of times I used the anchor lock feature...It was windy and we would stick a couple fish on a stretch of shoreline so I would hit anchor lock...Boat would lock on to that spot and hold us right there, not move around at all, and allow us to fish that area more thoroughly, and catch several more fish...With my old trolling motor, I would have just caught the fish we caught and been blown by so fast we would have missed them...Anchor lock is super accurate on this trolling motor, I can not express how accurate it is...I also love how it frees up deck space!!! No more foot pedal on the deck...That is a huge plus for me since my deck is cramped...

We also used the heading feature all day long...I would basically point the boat in the direction I wanted to go down the shoreline then hit the heading lock button on the hand held remote and wallah, we were off...I could concentrate on fishing and less on boat positioning...If needed to move left or right I simply touch the remote button and it would take it in the new direction...Speed can be adjusted on the fly by touching the +/-...The hand held remote is so convenient and easy to use I never even took the foot remote out of the locker...

This unit also has a built-in battery indicator... It was still on green when we got off the water @ 7pm...That was after using it all day long and going against a very strong wind most of the morning... I am impressed to say the least with the battery drain...

The only issue with this unit is how much it overhangs from the front of the boat...The only time it is in issue is during launch and loading...I learned this during the launch as it came down on the rollers as I slid into the water...Since I have it mounted on quick release mount, I simply unmount it now and lay it on the deck when launching and loading...Takes 10 seconds to do this...

I give this trolling motor a 10/10... Anchor lock was almost like having power poles/talons except we were in 20 ft of water and were able to pick apart an area...Anchor lock is accurate and fast...Retying was made easier, eating lunch, etc...Jim who I fished with was so impressed he was going home to tell his wife he needs a new trolling motor.

Here is a picture of the motor installed:

Yelo glad you are enjoying the motor! I ran mine all last year and theres no way I could go back to cable steer. One warning - which may or may not have been changed over the last year in updates - is that I have read the battery indicator can be deceiving. Apparently by the time it changes from green to red it is pretty much done.

That said I have yet to spend a day on the water where my motor started to slow down. Will be on a lake for a week this summer and we will see how everything holds up without being on the charger.

Like the OP I installed mine on the MK slide plate last week. The plate has more play in it than I would like but to not hit the bow roller anymore it will probably be more than worth it.

Great Write-up. I installed my Xi5 last week and have fished twice so far. This thing is awesome...Linked it to my Touch 12's. Spot lock is dead on. More time to concentrate on fishing...

^ i have used my xi5 religiously here on Lake Lanier where vertical dropshot on top of brush is a big thing here in the summer time. I too have it linked to my Gen2 Touch so after I use my big motor and ideal over a brush I simply mark a waypoint on the brush, drop the Xi5, and tell it to go to waypiont. It puts me pretty much right on top and anchors without missing a beat. The rest is pretty much video game playing once on top. Like everything there is some pro's and con's but at the moment the pro's out weigh the con's. I just hope it lasts me 5 years without any issues and I'll be happy.

just a tip for you guy's,always remember to unplug the motor from the batteries while charging, there have been damage issues to the internal circuit boards. I have mine on a center console,so,I just used a good shutoff switch inline with my 60 amp fuse
