Water also gets in around the grommet for the cables at the edge of the splash well. It is not a 100% seal.
When you turn the steering wheel the motor should move. Something is wrong.
If you have the blinker style you should be fine IMO.
Put your arm up through the front of the rod locker and take some pictures with your phone camera.
Better to have too much than not enough when it comes to battery amp hours.
A lot of those have newer engines. Also, the price of newer electronics and power poles add up quickly.

How do I get the thumbwheel on the engine end of the cable through the grommet on the front of the engine? I have a hot foot throttle. I have already checked the adjustment and shift linkage...
Installing it on is not bad. Getting the old glue off was the hard part.

I got away with polishing mine.
Put sealant on the screws and install in the holes. Use countersink screws with a flat head so they will be flush.
I have been using my older T/M like that for years without any issues. You can buy walking cane tips that provide a little extra cushion if you prefer.
Try to buy from the dealer he uses regularly and trusts if you can. Nothing worse than having to drive hundreds of miles for service just to save a few hundred dollars.
