Spikes wear down over time with usage. (Or when you deploy the Talon accidently and back down the 100 yard ramp. I'm not too bright sometimes.)

No, the transducer does not spin. There is an array of crystals aiming out in all directions (360 degrees). The crystals take turns pinging in whatever slice of the pie that you choose.
