That boat are you working on?
The access to the control unit was the biggest challenge on my Ranger R-91.
I had to disconnect the cables at the engine, to allow the control unit to be moved...
Success!
My boat drives like it should, with the new control unit & cables. I guess that last adjustment I made yesterday, is what it needed.
I have some pictures of how I determined the...
The picture of the gear lube is a little misleading. I cut the lid off a laundry detergent container, and cleaned it before using it. It made a nice little drain
pan.
When I noticed oil running...
I drained the gear lube from the LU. The LU is not “making metal”, zero glitter or other signs of metal in the oil.
I disconnected both cables. I inspected the throttle linkage and all moving...
Thanks for talking me through this Leon. I will post back what I find.

Did you read the thread!
I HAVE checked the cable...
The good thing is the engine runs great, smooth and powerful, like it should.
The boat looks and rides great, especially today, since the water was very calm.
I replaced the throttle remote control with a Mercury Gen-II unit, and two Mercury Gen-II Platinum cables.
Everything seemed to go well as I assembled everything, the new control box with new...
I pulled the engine remote control and both cables out of the boat so I can replace them.
I took the RC box to Budget Boats in Chesapeake, my local boat store. They have tons of old used stuff...
My latest update on the malfunctioning throttle/shift functions on my 1998 Ranger R-91I.
I disconnected the shift cable & throttle cable at the engine.
I disconnected and slid the remote...
Thank you for that (hard to find) info. It sounds like it’s a tough or tight access job, but it can be done.
With my handle & cover removed there are three screws that attaches to the boat. These...
I have a manual for this engine. It does not cover installation of the remote control for the engine. My manual says to refer to the remote control installation instructions for installing the remote...
I did what was done in that YouTube video above. I removed the button, nut, lever and the cover plate that hides the attachment screws. Mine were a little loose, so I tightened them up. Now my remote...
I found some YouTube videos that show how this works. I’ll post back later today with my results.

Thanks again Joe!
Joe,
Thanks for the reply, your info is always accurate, helpful and timely.
It sounds like something is disconnected or partially connected/disconnected, or loose. This is the way I read your...
I’ve had this 1998 Ranger R-91I with a Mercury 200 EFI about five or six years. The engine has always run well. I have done some minor maintenance like plugs, thermostats, impeller, and a low oil...
Thanks Joe!
I went to my local boat store for a Fuel Pump rebuild kit, to fix my 1998 Mercury 200 EFI. They sold me a Sierra 18-7818-1, and it is the wrong kit. Now, I am shopping the internet to find what I...
That is a great color combo, it’s a very nice looking boat, motor & trailer you have there! It even matches your truck, congrats!
Nice!
This forum is awesome!
I removed the six screws securing the floor where the spare prop is stowed. The aft all is attached to it, the rubber that is attached to the floor and aft wall is one...
When my plug went missing, I ordered two from Ranger Parts.
The plug has a T built into it, so when the plug is removed, it just hangs out of the hole it threads into.
Two screws and a little...
Ok. So you are saying to remove the horizontal floor area where the spare prop mount is located first. That’s what I will try. Thanks!
My charger is already removed, actually it was rusted so bad, it was barely attached…that is the reason for replacing it, because it still worked, but the steel structure that attaches it to the boat...
