Yea and make sure you put the belt back on with the writting up.. I have seen them come apart when the writting was turned down..
Almost sounds like it backfired back through the plenum then sucked a damaged reed back through the block.. But I am no Merc Tech just guessing..
I just spray fish formula in the hook box every so often and I don't have any problems plus I guess it would mask your scent when you tie a new hook on..

It can depending on the prop your running.. Sometimes raising the motor can improve holeshot by letting your prop get better ventilation..
That sounds correct to me.. But 4" may be a little low for a starting point.. I would think that 3" below would be a good starting point and you should end up somewhere around 2 1/2" below..
Mine was sticking a few months back.. I crawled up in there to take a look and a Zoom plastic worm had wrapped around the cable and gummed it up real bad.. I took some alcohol and a rag and cleaned...
A high content of Ethanol in the fuel can cause your poor performance and will increase the amount of soot on the prop.... May have your fuel checked for ethanol content..
It could be several other...

Prop slip on most Gamblers is around 8 to 9 % there are a few out there that will have slip numbers of 6 % but they are very rare..
