I'd go with 3 x 12v batteries. For 2 reasons First if the battery fails you lose all 36 volts Second you would need a 36v charger. If that charger fails it will be very hard to find a replacement...

No chance I'd be able to live with that. Even if it was free. I'm assuming this is for your kitchen and not your garage. The installers are trying to pull a fast one. IMHO Good luck
