Check the battery connections to the black box. Other than that what is his battery voltage?

Yes you can pause the Lvs32 and still use 2d. On the Livescope screen select Settings, then you will see a turn off transmit or pause sonar.

depends on what you mean by better. Probably not .... if the units are working good there is no rush/reason to update them.... lesson learned the hard way here.
