is that a 83 model motor,,im thinking if it is that year that merc was still measuring HP at the power head and not the prop.If so you will only be looking at about 120 HP at the prop.

I cant say for sure but sounds like you are having fuel delivery problems that your cold start injector is over riding when the engine is cold.

No didnt spin any faster than it did while you where running down the lake.

Faulty key switch maybe,,could cause it to shut off just like turning the key off.

sounds like ya might be loosing fuel pressure or fire.
