I got the 6' cable and used a Trailer Plug mounting bracket from O'Rilly Auto and mounted it in the bilge. I use the O ring lube from the Pool Supply every 2-3 months.

On a 17 yr old trailer, you more than likely need new bushings, bolts, equalizer, and shackles. Might even need springs. Check the center of the spring leafs for cracks or checking.
