No, the bottom side is open. The top side cover comes off with two screws. I used the yellow ring connectors on mine. There was plenty of space under there.
No problem. I haven't been using it long, but it sure seems like it'll hold up.
Pleased with it so far. Best built plug that I've been able to find.

Keens water sandles. Look really stupid, but man they are comfortable. They at least have enough rubber on the bottom to keep the hooks out of your feet too.
