Another thing to check is the vacume line on the fuel pressure regulator. Mine got a small split in it one time and would act up in rough water

Your just splicing two wires together butt splice and some heat shrink or elec tape. I soldered mine together then some heat shrink.

With out looking at a wiring diagram my guess is its how it reverses polarity to the trim motor . Had similar setups on the jets I worked on.
