Roger that!
Yeah, just to be clear it was ultimately a question about automotive oil in an outboard, not about me not following this or that. My new Tohatsu is broke in now following the manufacturer’s...
I recently viewed a link on breaking in a new 4-stroke engine that was totally opposite of the usual slow and easy methods. It was here on BBC but I haven’t been able to locate the link again. I do...
Thanks for the info. will do. Tohatsu says drop pitch and adjust motor height. Dealer says bad tach. Xpress referred me over to PowerTech. Waiting to hear what they have to say, but not knocking...
Thank you for all of the information.
2.08 on the new Tohatsu and 2.00 on my old Optimax
I was afraid of that. Each pitch decrease is about a 400 rpm gain average, so a 15-16 pitch prop just to push a 40 mph turd.
45-46 mph with the old one and 5600 rpms. Both 20” shafts and they just mounted the new outboard in the same holes on the jackplate as the old one. They’ve been a Tohatsu dealer for many years.
2003 18’ H56. I recently repowered from a 2003 Optimax 135 to a new Tohatsu 140 four stroke. It’s lighter and way smoother. I’m still breaking it in, but at the short WOT runs I’m doing I can’t get...

To start if you have a welding tip / carb. jet cleaner you could try to "rod out" the hole. May get lucky and it be some crud or scale built up near the hole opening. Can even try some heavy weight...
Thanks for all of the advise on this. Found the signal wire to the back of the gauge was not connected correctly from the new outboard wiring harness under the console. There were 3 disconnected...
I gotcha, but not the wires to the switch, I’m talking about the wires to the gauge on the console.
Anyone know what color wires feed the trim gauge from the trim sending unit? Would they be the same for a Honda and Tohatsu?
Thanks a bunch!
Roger that, sure appreciate it.
I will look into all of this. Thank you for taking the time out to help, it is very much appreciated.
I'll have to check when I get home to make sure, but I believe it's a Faria trim gauge.... would that be universal?
Where would the trim sending unit be located on the outboard?
It sure does go to zero when I ground it. What does that mean?
And the tach does have a dial on the back of it…..
I just repowered from an Optimax 135 to a 2023 Tohatsu 140 four stroke. Trim level gauge won’t move off of 100% no matter if I trim up or down and tachometer is reading 300 rpm’s too low at idle....
Just found out these are "rental" outboards.
Thanks, looks to be the same location as the Service company. I talked to the owner, real nice and honest sounding fella. Says these Mercs sell within days of listing and that high hours on the...
Alright thanks!
