Thoughts on the Loomis NRX 852S for shaky head and heavier drop shot?
I had an 852 and went to the 872 for shakeyhead (3/16 99% of the time). I like the extra length and softer tip on the 872, to me it fishes a half power softer than the 852
I haven't had the 852 but I do have the 872 and love it as it’s very versatile. I also have the 822syr and although I don't have much time with it I feel like it will fill the gap on more finesse applications between the two. With that said I'll probably wind up with a 852 eventually.
it's amazing as a shakey head rod... id never Dropshot with it though. It's a true extra fast with a stiff tip. The 872s has a much more forgiving tip.
I would not use it for nose hooked drop shot baits but it does very well with texas rigged baits. It handles shakey heads pretty good but the 872 is definitely better
Thanks for the replies! Looks like I need to keep looking for an 872S.
I am the odd ball. I love the 852s for 1/4 oz weight fishing drop shots cast and retrieve style using braid and a leader. I made this change last year and had great success hook up ratio and land percentage. It replaced a 7’2 med XF Cumara rod.
I have fished shakey heads and up to 1/2oz drop shot with the NRX852s and it does fine. I find the NRX 852s very versatile. I like the rod so much I have 2 :thumb up2:
I think you would be happier with the 872S it can do more things than the 852S. I like the faster tip of the 872S
I ordered both an 822DSR and an 872S. Buying two NRX rods at once is never good for the pocketbook
The 852 will do both easy. At least it does for me. Great all around rod. I use mine for drop shot, finesse jigs, jerk baits, swim baits, senko’s and ned rig. Another great rod at a better price is the new megabass Levante Enforcer. Check them out.
To me, the 852 is too powerful for a drop shot. It's overall my favorite spinning rod I have though. I've got a whole rack full of amazing spinning rods and the 852 is my favorite....
I wouldn't ever use my 852 for a drop shot rod. Much better options available.
Since you mention "heavier" drop shot, the 822 DSR may disappoint ...Unless you are going to do that on the 872 and light drop shotting with the 822...it is super, super soft.
i have had all three 822,852,and872 . i used the 852 for mostly shakey heads and i did use it a few times for drop shotting with hook texas rigged and worked well with the extra power. for open water and open hook smaller weight the 822 will be the ticket. for me the 872 is my favorite because decent power with a softer tip over the 852 , the 872 became my jack of all trades rod from the nrx line up .
