Hello all,
I picked up my 2019 Triton 189 TRX with a Mercury 175 Pro XS 4 stroke (no jack plate) a couple of weeks ago.
It came from he dealer with a 21 pitch Tempest Plus, to which I commented right away was too small of a prop for the 175. They said that it comes equipped like that from the factory.
I took the boat out and did the initial break in for two hours. I didn't go above the 6000 rpms recommended for this outboard.
I believe I was able to get like 51 mph at 6000 rpms. I emailed the dealer and they are looking into it for me (maybe dealing with Triton on it, who knows...) I told them I needed at least a 23 pitch tempest.
This weekend my son had a fishing tournament, so I decided to go all the way to the limiter and see what the boat would do.
I was able to get to 6900 rpms (analog tach) and a speed of 56 mph gps.
I know analogs can be off, but I am sure that it is revving too high.
Does a 23 Tempest Plus sound like the right prop?
I have not check engine height.....
PS: The sticker on the lower unit where it has the gear ratio said 14x24 which I assume is the generic prop recommendation.
Also the 189 TRX was rated for a max of 150 HP until a year or two ago, maybe that's where all the mix up has come in?
