    Replace Throttle Control 'Neutral' Button?

    Hi,

    I've recently purchased a 2002 Bass Tracker Pro Team 165, with a 40HP Mercury 2-stroke motor.

I threw the muffs on it, and the motor started right up for the first time after the winter without a problem. However, it won't engage to drop into Forward or Reverse. I've taken apart the throttle control console, and it seems as if the "assisted idle, throttle only" button is stuck, so the shift cable is never being moved by the control arm.

Does anyone know where I can find a replacement throttle control arm like that, or know where to get a replacement pin for the button itself? It's lost is 'clicky'-ness; the button seems to be broken, and it's like it just won't pop back out of it's 'neutral only' position.

I'd really prefer to just fix the button itself, rather than completely replace the throttle control. I'd like to solve this in as budget-friendly a manner as possible, of course.

Any and all help is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Chris:

Since there are dozens of possible controls that could be in this boat... it would be a good idea to provide a picture of the control handle (and panel faceplate) so we have some means of identifying what you're working on.

    Hi Don,

I appreciate the help. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about. It's the center button which seems to be failing to engage/disengage, which forces the motor to remain in neutral, throttle only, at all times.

That's a Commander 3000 "Classic" control (now discontinued).

A replacement "throttle only" button is available (Part# 822212T)... however, it's unlikely that the button alone will solve the problem.

Certainly worth a try... but the actual linkage that operates the throttle only function is inside the modular unit (behind the control panel).

Individual components for the modular control are scarce.... as the controls are now replaced with a later version control, and "Gen-2 cables".

Re: Replace Throttle Control 'Neutral' Button? (EuropeanAM)

    Don,

You're exactly right. After tearing the entire unit apart, I've noticed there seems to be too much play with the gear underneath the cam, which is causing the cogs to fail to align correctly, and as such, it won't engage the shifting cable.

So, at this point, I'll be replacing the entire control arm. You said the Commander 3000 is discontinued? What would be a suitable replacement? I'd be happy with a generic part, if possible.

    Thanks again,
    Chris

    Control: 883710A02 (4000 Panel Mount "Lock-Bar" Control)

Cables: 897978AXX (XX would be the length of the cable, as required.... for Gen-2 cables)

Sherm @ Sherm's Marine (or I) would be happy to assist you with these.

Email or Phone are the BEST means of contacting the Parts Department(s) for pricing, availability, or ordering.
