    From the initial press release:

    "When paired with the wireless module, users can download the GoFree Wireless apps on their iPhone, iPad and Android devices to remotely view and control their HDS Gen2 Touch displays."

    GoFree Wireless is a wireless networking solution combining user-friendly mobile software and rugged marine-grade hardware. The GoFree Wireless solution consists of the GoFree Viewer, GoFree Controller applications, and the multi-branded Lowrance WIFI-1 wireless gateway. The WIFI-1 enables wireless connectivity between HDS Gen2 and HDS Gen2 Touch multifunction displays (MFDs) and tablets, mobile phones and computers, GoFree Wireless offers boaters an exciting new level of navigational control, even for bass boats. Like any other wireless technology, there seems to be no limits on the uses. GoFree Wireless is also the industry’s first wireless solution to support open source protocol and NMEA data sharing. By using the Lowrance WIFI-1 to create a powerful data bridge, the HDS system data can be shared via open source protocol to a range of third party PC and Mac navigational software and iOS apps. Open source protocol means app developers anywhere of any skill level can access the system data for display for FREE. Professional app developers have access to a GoFree development toolkit that allows for greater control of system data. Open source protocol adds up to an endless stream of boating applications. If you create an app that enhances the HDS Gen2 or HDS Gen2 Touch experience Lowrance will help you promote it.

    Regarding available software to support Lowrance multifunction displays ...

    Lowrance has stated from the beginning of the product launch for HDS Gen2 TOUCH, in October 2012, support/software would come in early 2013 for both HDS Gen2 and HDS Gen2 TOUCH. The idea to release and ship the WIFI-1 module before software is ready (in HDS Gen2 and HDS Gen2 Touch) is a long one and certainly not the intention of Lowrance to trap or mislead loyal Lowrance users. One poster touches on part of it in reference to product scope. Central (and digital) control and monitoring of all boat functions is an inevitable path boat and marine industry manufactures are taking. Lowrance has always taken a leading role in the development of those technologies. To be brief, the GoFree Wireless Technology and WIFI-1 module are also compatible with several other multifunction displays for Simrad-Yachting (Cruiser and Off-Shore boats) and B&G (Sailing). Each of these MFDs have unique user interface requiring unique Smartphone and Tablet App development as well as specific updates to MFD software (menu options, etc). The GoFree Wireless Technology path and product integration were first announced to the boating world in 2011. 2012 saw compatible WIFI-1 modules, multifunction displays and viewer and control App systems in the marketplace. Here is an example of GoFree Wireless Technology controlling a mega-yacht {use attached iPad image, GoFree Control of boat functions}. The HDS and HDS Gen2 Touch software updates enabling GoFree Wireless Technology functions for Apple devices is on track for Q1 release as promised. Android device support shortly after.

    Potential bass boat and small vessel application ...

    Chances are likely that you already own one if not several Smartphone or Tablet devices. Each can become another display on your boat. Settled on a smaller HDS-7 Gen2 in the dash of your bass boat? Add WIFI-1 and a RAM mount iPad cradle with arm socket and 1-inch ball to the side saving considerably less over paying $2,500 for a larger 9-, 10- or 12-inch display. Frequently take mess of easily bored kids with you? Imagine each with their own personal fishfinder (set to Viewer Only and in a floating case, of course). Upload geo-referenced snapshots of your fish catches to Facebook. Have software automatically pushed to your boats system. Having trouble seeing the display at your feet when casting from the front deck? Get yourself a wrist strap and never miss another target, what you need to see right where you need it. Here’s a peek of HDS Gen2 Touch being viewed from an iPhone in beta applications. {use attached iPhone image, Lowrance GoFree Viewer_HDS Gen2 TOUCH.jpg}

    What I am really waiting to see is how the resolution will work... My assumption is the resolution will only be as good as the source you are remotely viewing with some rescaling to fit the iPad screen or possibly black bars. This is one of the key items that drove me to order the HDS 12 touch over the 9, because I figured the extra $$$ bought me a larger picture on both devices. Boat is getting rigged up this week, hopefully v2 firmware for the touch will drop soon so I can test.
