I am considering getting the Elite 7X HDI for the front of my boat. Does the down scan images look detailed enough? Is the DI on the Elite 7 any better then the Elite 5's were? I am hoping that it is closer the the HDS DI image?

The Elite 5 and the Elite 7 have the same downscan technology. The images are pretty good. But the Images from the LSS2 is more clear and has better resolution. But for the average weekend fisherman the technology from the elite units should suffice.

I already have a HDS7 on the dash and was looking for a color unit with DI on the bow. I do a lot of tournaments, so a little more than the weekend angler. I would get another HDS for the front, but I don't want the front DI running off the back. Has Lowrance came out with a Down Image transducer for the HDS series yet so we can have DI off the trolling motor? Or do we still have to buy a whole second LSS module and transducer for the front to get DI?
Pretty sure the new elite 7 HDI transducer can be used by the Gen 2 HDS units. So, if you like the HDS units features better, just get you a gen 2 HDS & then buy the HDI transducer & mount it to your trolling motor.
You can use the Elite 7 HDI transducer on the HDS unit but by doing that you will still get the same data the on the HDS as you would on the elite. The LSS transducer is just more powerful. If you got a touch unit you can plug the LSS transducer directly to the unit. But if you are going with the regular HDS unit then you would have to get two separate LSS boxes to utilize the information that you wanted.
one main thing IMO is that if you have an HDS on the console, then why wouldnt you get a HDS for the front. Then you can link to the 2 units and share info between them and stuff like that
BUT, I have had my Elite 7 HDI since the day that Brian at BBG got them in stock, about a month ago. LOVE IT, Best bang for your buck out the I think!!

The HDI transducer (down scan portion) will only work when connected to the Elite 7 or any HDS Touch screen. You can network the Elite/HDS units via NMEA 2000 to share waypoints and add an external antenna or other accessories if you like.
