I am in the market for a new fish finder. Wanting to just get one unit mounted next to my console on a ram mount to use while drive and be able to turn it around to use while fishing from the front of the boat. I have looked at both the Humminbird 800's and 900's and Lowrance HDS 7 and 8. Just wanting some opinions, pros and cons, and any suggestions from anyone.
I dont think you can go wrong with either of them. But since you are only getting one graph i would at least get a 7 inch screen as the 5 would be a little small to see from both locations. The HDs-7 would probably be the most economical option. As you can get a 7 and a 5 for the price of an 8. Then all you would need is to get a ram mount or a johnny ray mount so you can turn the unit back and forth.
I have a Low my bud has a bird. They both do a good job but my 2d sonar is much better than his.
If you go Low consider the 8 over the 7. It has many more options as well as the larger screen.
Depends on which units that you have. The 2D down sonar images on my HB 997 running 83/200 kHz is MUCH, MUCH better than the images on my Lowrance 520C unit. I'm talking serious improvements in both coverage area and image quality. Can't say how it compares to the new HDS units down sonar though, as I have the 520C and not the HDS-5.
