    998 HD vs. 998; 998 vs. 1198

Are the 998 HD's that much better than the old 998's? I have a 798 CI SI that I have been running at the console but am looking at upgrading to at least a 998. Great prices on 998's right now. I can purchase two 998s for one 1198. Does the screen size difference make that much difference between the 998 and 1198?

The 998c HD SI, when it is available, will have the same backlighting as your 798ci SI (LED). The now discontinued and on sale 998c SI units have CCFL backlighting. Some complain about the sunlight viewability of the CCFL models especially when the screen is tilted up like when used at the bow. The 1198c SI has the LED backlighting also.

As far as screen size, BIGGER is better.
Since Humminbird changed the unit software to remove the data boxes from the left side with the Side Imaging view, the 898 and 998 have become somewhat more desirable than they were.

Since I have the 1198c SI units and a 798ci SI, I would not downsize to any of the smaller display models. Bigger screens display stuff bigger.
I have used the 998c SI units on other's boats.

Thank you for the information. With the 798 I can't get the definition that I want so I want a unit that gives me good definition. Do you like the older 998's? Where do you have your 1198 installed?

All the boats I have been on with the 998c SI have been at the console. I had no problem seeing them.

Any screen bigger than the next smaller size will show stuff bigger.
The larger the screen size you have, the less resolution you will get. The 798 has the highest resolution display in the industry. That has 31,170.5 pixels per square inch. The 998 has 12,755.7 pixels per square inch.
The 1198c SI has 8,858.2 pixels per square inch.
If you take a screen capture with the 798 and the 1198 and print or display them at the same size, they would look about the same.

I just have a dinky 16' Tracker and have a 1198c SI at the bow and console.

I have 2 997s (CCFL)and an 1197.(LED) I have never had a complaint with my 997s visibility, although you dont have to look very hard on the net to find complaints..I think is primarily is because there are LED lit and CCFL lit in the same family... and people want the better lit screens.

If I was looking to upgrade to a 800 or 900 series unit, it would be a very hard decision whether to go with the HD at full price, or the non HD at such a reduced price

I will be upgrading to an 1198 unit this winter, as soon as the IPilot Link comes out, otherwise, there is no way that I would be upgrading, as Im very happy with my units..

    1197 in the bow

997 on the dash is how I have mine set up..

1197 will stay on the bow, and the 1198 will go to the dash to drive the ILink..

(and yes, I know the 1197 will drive the ILink also, but I want it on the console)

I could be mistaken, but I think your 798 has the highest pixel density of all the SI units. You should be getting the detail, it takes more looking to see it on the smaller screen.

91reddog, your 1197c SI has the CCFL backlighting just like your 997c SI unit does.

Thanks for all the help. Still undecided but have a little bit of time since all of our lakes have iced over.

The old 998's may sell out. I think some vendors are already out of them......guess that would make the decision easier.

I am still skeptical that the only difference between the current 998 and the new one is the LED backlit display.....I know that the only information being released, but I think that was the same thing being said when the 1198 came out....That the only difference was the display and maybe some talk of it having a faster processor. There were other enhancements made to the 1198 at the same time and it has a completely different operating system than the 1197.
The new 998 could have faster processors, more memory, etc???

998c only enhancement I have been told was the updating of the screen to LED Backlight. No Processor Enhancement and OS Software is the same as 1197c and 1198c and current 898c & 998c.

thank you. Any thoughts on my original question, two 998's or one 1198 and 798?

Can you swing 898c and 1198c? or Dual 998c would be good too. I like the added features of the 898c, 998c and 1198c more screen and customization of split screens is more important for me. 798c is a great unit but I think you get more bang with the 898c.

The cost of the 1198 is probably my ceiling for my cash reserves right now. Just have an option to buy two 998's at a decent price. One new and one slightly used. Thank you for your help. It is greatly appreciated. I really the bird's but the 798 just isn't big enough. Just want to make sure the 998 is going to be big enough.

I use a 998c on the bow now and 1198c at console. 998c is plenty for the bow. Or you could do an 1198c and set up dual Stations until you afford what you really want for the second location. No need to buy something you'd regret. Personally I could get by with 898c or 998c but the 1198c is just so much easier.

Bigger the screen the easier to see the small details.

There are some great deals on the older units but I am going with the 2 of the new 998c HD SI with the LED display units on my Skeeter 20i.
