trolling motor kicked out on high speed

I was fishing today and when I switched it to high speed it kicked out after about 30 seconds. I let it set for a minute and lowered the speed and it started running again. It a minn kota 70lb thrust 2006 model. I wondered if anyone else has experianced this?

Probably tripped the auto re set breakers. You need 50 amp breakers and probably have 40 amp. Make sure you have 4-6 gauge wire before going to a 50 amp.

Mine does that all the time. I have a Minn Kota Maxxum 80. I have to turn it off and at a lower speed and it comes back on

Mine did that also. When I swapped the wing nuts to stainless hex nuts it stopped.

Check all of your connections on the batterys, breakers, plug on trolling motor. Make sure they dont have any corrosion and are tight. Could be breakers getting weak, too small of wire for size if trolling motor, when running in high and it stops, are the wires feeding the trolling motor plug really hot?

    Man...I love this site!

I just had this happen to me today as I took the boat out of storage and used it for the first time this year.

My breaker posts look to have some rust on them. I would like to replace them.
Where can they be found online?

    Thanks

Re: trolling motor kicked out on high speed (selwood)

I had that happen one time when the wind was blowing me up on some rocks and I was laying the coals to the TM (Maxxum 80). Luckily, my son-in-law was with me and he was able to reach into the battery compartment and re-set the breaker. It's never done it again but I do avoid keeping it on 100 for very far too.

Just wondering if those higher dollar Minn Kota and the like circuit breakers would be any better at not doing this? If I hadn't had someone with me that one time, I would have had a bashed up boat.

    Are these any better?

You may actually have the right size breaker. They will still go out at high speed. I keep several spares for the different size breakers in my boat.

Something is wrong then... They should not trip... Unless your in thick weeds putting additional stress on the system... They should not trip while on high in open water no matter how long you keep it on high.

Alot of times even the manufactures don't use thick enough wires and/or circuit breakers that are up to the task as these are easy places to cut costs and no one notices

My batteries are new, terminals are clean and all connections tight. The batteries were fully charged at the time and I wasw in clear water, just trying to get to a creek mouth a little faster. I did not see a reset on the breaker, where is it located?

They are supposed to as close to the positive battery terminal as possible.

Re: trolling motor kicked out on high speed (21XDC)

The breakers are probably the little tin boxes with two 3/8" nuts near the battery. Most reset themselves. If they have popped a lot they will probably change value and trip easier than they should. You should check for line behind the prop first and make sure the shear pin isn't bent. Corrosion or overheated wires will reduce the current by adding resistance in series with the motor. You should go to the Minnkota website, find out how much current your exact motor draws at full speed, and size your breakers accordingly. You may have 40 amp breakers but need 50's. The rating of the breakers is stamped or silkscreened on them or cast into the plastic part.
