    Older Legend

I talked to a guy yesterday that has a '03 Legend to sell. The price he quoted me was really, really good. (Almost too good; I'll be checking this out thoroughly) Anyway, I thought I had read that there were some problems with the early Legend boats and got to wondering if anyone knows if that year boat has any wood in it? Are there any other problems that I should be aware of? He said he bought it new and had taken it out 1 time and it's just sat since then. It's got a 250 Merc on it so I presume it's a 20-21 footer. I didn't have a lot of time to talk to him about it but I got his phone # and will be calling him to see about going to check it out.

Be careful with those years. I live about 10 minutes from where they were built (Clanton Al), and know people that worked there. Before 2000-2001 they were a very well made boat. And held up well. But after that, the owner got greedy, laid off the local workers, and started hiring illegals to work there, and workmanship started to decline. The last few years they were built, they were not put together real well and the QC was awful. Had alot of problems with fit and finish and the boats were just not good anymore. The owner ended up fixing alot of boats for free and had some legal trouble. Closed the plant, and the boat dealership he had.
Just look it over real good top to bottom. If it looks good and is in good shape go for it. Just my .02 cents from a local.
There is a salesman at Airport Marine 205-664-0407 named Chris Craig I believe, that was one of the Legend salesmen back then, he might be able to help you out.

Might want to repost in the Legend Boats forum if you want real answers. Don't think Legend boats were even made before 02 unless there was another boat being sold as Legend.

I think Legends were made here in Texas before moving their operation to Arkansas several years ago. I don't think they were ever made in Alabama

If it a Legend Dominator, it may be one of the Alabama made Legends. I seen one on the way to work yesterday. It looked to have that time frame Yamaha VMax on it. If its one of those, posting it in the Legend forum will get you nowhere.

If it is a legend dominator, it is similar to a bullet. Though not as well made as a bullet.

There was a Legend boat made in Bama several years ago. Not the same as the current Legend though.

Ok, sorry. I didn't know about that one. I think there is also a tin boat manufacturer with the Legend name also...popular name for a boat!

I wouldn't worry about where the boat was made or wasn't made, I'd be worried about a 9 year old motor that has been setting around and only ran once. Hopefully, it's been setting inside a building or garage since new. IMO, I'd hire a mercury machanic to go with you to look at it and let him run some tests on it, unless the seller will let you take it to a dealership close by. just my $.02

I am like Hardhead1 i would have a good tech check the motor over first . I know it would need a new water pump before running it on the lake . Also i try and find out if he has fog the motor . If not it could have rust all thru the cycliners and parts . Also the gas ,has it been treated . Your injectors and also the air compressor may have rust in it also if not been oil has not been put in to it.
Like i said before try to start the whole gas system may need to be clean and fitlers change and also i would have a compressure check on the motor .
I would post over on the Mercury forum for Don WEED before buy this motor and boat . He eat and sleeps these mercury motors .

There was a boat made in Clanton Alabama named Legend, right off of hwy 31. They had the Dominator series, and also made some smaller models. The older Dominators looked just like a Bullet, and those were the good ones and ran pretty good also. His smaller models were also a good boat. It was the last 3-4 years they really started going down. They guy that owned them had a boat dealership called Gene's Marine of off exit 212 on I65. I used to go there alot to look at some of the ones he just built and buy my parts there. He had 1 there that was the John Deere colors. Pretty cool looking boat.
The Legend boats out now is a totally different company and a totally different boat.

Gene bought the Vision Boats molds and started Legend Boats with them. The Dominator was his first original Legend that was NOT out of a Vision mold.
