Bad power pack or coil symptoms?

Anybody know what the symptoms are if a power pack goes bad?Or a coil? And how many of each one are on a 1992 E200STLENS?May be replacing them soon.

Motor is E200STLENS (no VRO,electric fuel pump)

My original problem was the boat not being able to plane.I thought it was a gas/carb issue but after being on the lake yesterday,I'm thinking it may be a power pack or coil issue.I hammered the gas,it lost power,I just kept on the gas and it finally got on plane.I started trimming up but I could tell that I had lost lots of power BUT I could still get the rpm's up there.......just wasnt going very fast.Whenever I would give it gas it seemed like the motor barely noticed it.

Motor starts right up but the idle has gotten a little rough.

I think you posted you have checked the compression already, Now you need to warm the motor, (with water of course) remove all the spark plugs and reinsert them back into the plug boots, lay the plugs against the heads...DO NO TOUCH.

Have someone crank the motor and look at the spark on each plug...DO NOT TOUCH, if all have a nice dark blue spark all is good, if any are orange or have no spark this is a problem.

If one has no spark remove the small wire to the coil, move the small wire from the lower coil to the one that has no spark, recheck, if it sparks you have a pack or timerbase problem....This test will eliminate a bad coil.

One other thing, if the one with no spark is one of the bottom cylinders you may not be able to move the small lead down as they are too short to reach.

Rusty i just got back from technicians house....
he checked all spark, all good except for one.(port side, middle plug)He's putting in new coil tomorrow.
another thing he ran across was that one of the smaller wires(to the coil above dead one) was bad, making the upper coil miss, possibly meaning a new switch box.Does that sound right? One wire making the whole switch box bad and in need of replacement?

Could be, if the just the wire is damaged it may be repairable.
